BOARD OF SELECTMEN
TUESDAY, JUNE 27, 2006

The regular meeting of the Board of Selectmen convened at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room at 110 Main Street. In attendance were Edward S. Harrison and Kathleen C. Norbut. Richard E. Guertin was absent. Also present were the Town Administrator and the media.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.

Acceptance of Meeting Minutes:
Ms. Norbut made a motion to accept the meeting minutes of May 23, 2006 – executive session and June 13, 2006 – open and executive sessions. Mr. Harrison seconded and it was so VOTED.

Appoint New Custodian:
Mr. Harrison explained the current custodian has recently resigned. An ad was placed in the newspapers and posted with the union. Approximately fourteen applications were submitted. A committee comprised of Mr. Harrison, Dorothy Jenkins and Chip Lapointe reviewed the applications. Following the elimination process, five candidates were chosen and interviews were set up with four candidates actually attending their scheduled interview. The committee was recommending Paul DeMaio to fill the custodial position based on his strong experienced background.

Ms. Norbut made a motion to appoint Paul DeMaio as the town custodian effective July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007. Mr. Harrison seconded and it was so VOTED.

Complete Reappointments:
Ms. Norbut made a motion and read into the record the attached list of reappointments to the Police Department. Mr. Harrison seconded and it was so VOTED.

Discussion – Agriculture Commission Membership Needs:
Mr. Harrison explained the creation of an Agriculture Commission was voted upon and approved at the last Town meeting. Mr. Harrison read the attached statement, which was the vote taken at that meeting and the list of whom the committee should be comprised of. Mr. Harrison said they are currently seeking members for this committee and that an article will be placed in the newspapers looking for volunteers to serve. Ms. Neggers said information will also be posted on the towns’ web site. Anyone is interested should know that they don’t need to come from a large farm to qualify to serve on the committee; it could be a backyard farm, organic farming, large farms, etc. Residents interested in serving on the Agricultural Committee should send a letter to the Selectmen’s office or call the office for more information.

Correspondence was read and completed.

New Business to Come Before the Board of Selectmen:
Ms. Norbut informed the listening audience that the fireworks will be held on Friday, June 30th in Veterans Field. Ms. Neggers said for last minute updates as to the cancellation of the fireworks due to rain, people should visit the Summerfest web site at monsonsummerfestinc.com or visit the towns’ web site. This will help to reduce the number of telephone calls coming into the office. On Tuesday, the 4th of July, the Girl Scout‘s will hold their pancake breakfast followed by the parade at 10:00 a.m. Ms. Norbut noted the Summerfest Committee has been working hard all year getting everything all set. Mr. Harrison added it should be a fun time for everyone.

At 7:28 p.m., Ms. Norbut made a motion to adjourn from open session to go into executive session for the purpose of discussing collective bargaining (AFSCME) not to return to open session. Mr. Harrison seconded and it was so VOTED.
