Parks and Rec Commission Minutes 9/10/13
Minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Present:  Peter Beaupre, Michael Arbour

Also Present:  Jeannie Guertin, Secretary/Clerk

Mike Arbour called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the age requirements for the basketball program.   Age requirements of all our programs need to be looked at; however, this meeting specifically was to discuss the basketball program, since registration forms will be prepared shortly for distribution.

Peter had researched what other local towns were doing relative to their programs, primarily the younger age groups.  He had prepared a draft of how we should format our basketball program for our younger participants. After discussion it was decided that there would be a “First Start” program, which would be for boys and girls who have turned age 3 by 12/7/13 (the first date of practice).  This program would be for children who have not yet played basketball and we would encourage Kindergarteners to start at this level if they have never played before.  We should state on the registration form that an adult must be available at practices for each participating child.

The next division would be “Youth Basketball” which would be for boys and girls who are in Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade.

The registration form should also state the following:
  • 2nd graders will be allowed to play for the 3rd/4th grade rec team, and will also be allowed to try out and play for the CYO 3rd/4th grade team as reflected in CYO league rules
  • 4th graders will be allowed to play for the 5th/6th grade rec team, and will also be allowed to try out and play for the CYO 5th/6th  grade team as reflected in CYO league rules
  • 6th graders will be allowed to play for the 7th/8th grade rec team, and will also be allowed to try out and play for the CYO 7th/8th grade team as reflected in CYO leagues rules, but will not be allowed to play for the Suburban 7th/8th grade team as reflected in Suburban league rules
  • All rules are subject to change and are utilized as guidelines based upon league rules and Monson Parks & Recreation procedures.
When it comes time to discuss age requirements for lacrosse, baseball and soccer, the Commission can use the basketball requirements and edit as needed for each sport.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:20 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeannie Guertin
Secretary/Clerk
