Parks and Rec Commission Minutes 7/16/12
Minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
Thursday, July 19, 2012

Present:  Steve O’Shea (Chairman), Michael Arbour

Also Present:  Timothy Pascale, Director; Jeannie Guertin, Secretary/Clerk

Steve O’Shea called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.

The $500,000 grant from the state was discussed.  All the projects are supposed to be completed in one year.  Tim went to Flynt Park with the forester to find boundary pins, and found half of them.  A lot of the nice trails are just off the Town’s property; therefore, some new trails will have to be made. The drainage project will have to wait until the forestry project is complete.  John Morrell did clearing above the lower field to get brush out of the way.  Gretchen Neggers has to get bids for the tennis courts.  Steve O’Shea asked that Tim send Gretchen an e-mail letting her know that the Commissioners were asking for the status of this project.

The first week of Summer Fun Week we made $380.  The second week will be close to breaking even or making money.  The current number of participants for each week is 29, 31, and 28, respectively, but there probably will be more signups coming for the third week.

Current numbers for the Basketball Clinic are 20 for the first week, and 11 for the second week.

On August 7 there will be a Home Court Makeover sponsored by the Boston Celtics and RE/MAX.  A Monson family was selected for this, which includes lining the homeowner’s driveway with  lines and the Celtics logo, a basketball hoop, and bedroom makeovers for the family’s children.  Following the reveal of the makeover, the Celtics will host a basketball clinic for boys and girls ages 8-14 at 2:00-3:00 p.m.  The clinic will be run by a current Celtics player and a Celtics “legend”.  The timeframe of the clinic falls within the same time as the first week of our Mustang Basketball Clinic.  Participants of both weeks of the Mustang Basketball Clinic will be included in the Celtics clinic, as well as special invited guests.  At the conclusion of the clinic there will be an autograph session with the Celtics players.  While details are still being worked out, it is expected that each participant can have two guests watch the clinic in the bleachers of the gym.

Jeannie sent an e-mail to Don Smith asking that the Pool Agreement for the current year be forwarded to the Parks and Rec Department to be signed off, but hadn’t received it yet.

Tim met with Craig Szado, the varsity baseball coach, who will run our Tri Town evaluations.   Craig would like to hold the evaluations in March in the high school gym, as had been done in prior years.  It was also discussed to have coaches’ clinics held before our baseball season, especially for the younger teams.

Soccer registrations are currently under way.  Pete Beaupre had requested that a center line be painted on the soccer field for instructional soccer.

Kyle Demaio has been named interim cemetery superintendent, and Kyle’s former position has been posted.   Two of our Future Work employees have been helping the cemetery.

Mike Arbour made a motion to accept the minutes of the June 21 meeting.  Steve O’Shea seconded; all in favor and the motion passed.

The next meeting will be held August 16.  Jeannie will check with Steve Slozak to see if this date works for him, and if so, what time is better, 6:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m.

Steve O’Shea made a motion to adjourn at 7:42 p.m., and Mike Arbour seconded. All in favor; meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeannie Guertin
Secretary/Clerk
