Parks and Rec Commission Minutes 8/20/08
Minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Present:  Steve Slozak, Barry Cady and Steve O’Shea
Also Present:  Timothy Pascale, Director

Steve Slozak called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m.

Barry made a motion to accept the minutes from the July meeting.  Steve O’Shea seconded and all in favor.
Steve Slozak met with the board of health and discussed the Smoking issue at the playground located at Veterans Field. Steve Slozak made a motion to install a sign reading “Please refrain from smoking in the playground area”, Steve O’Shea seconded, all in favor and motion passed.

Tim discussed the condition that the schools were in when the department arrived for our summer camps. The schools were very dirty and trash bags were not supplied as they were supposed to as well as soap for the restrooms.

Steve Slozak asked about the progress of donations for Summer Theater. Tim made the commission aware that the $5500 was raised to pay the electric at the school without charging the children a users fee. Tim cautioned that he does not feel this kind of money can be raised on a yearly basis and he is afraid of the future of the program.

Steve Slozak mentioned that the power supply at Quarry Hill is still in the wrong place. He discussed the issue with Gretchen Neggers and it is in her hands now.

Steve Slozak asked Tim about the progress of the tennis court proposal. Tim said Jeanne has called and we are waiting word from M + M Paving. We have heard the business has been sold and we are unsure if the new company will be honoring the proposal.

Steve O’Shea mentioned he has not heard from the planning board regarding the signage at the baseball fields. He will continue to try to reach them.

Tim asked about the current progress of the raise he had spoken to the commission about. They made him aware that a letter had been drafted to the selectmen but they had not been notified of any decision.

Tim made the commission aware of the springs that are flowing at Lower Rogers Field. He had hoped to reroute the water off the playing field when it dried up but to this point they had not dried up.

Steve O’Shea asked Tim to include the Granite City Electric voting link on the next weekly email which would reach over 200 people who receive the email each week.

Barry made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 7:00, Steve O’Shea seconded, all in favor and the motion passed.

Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the Parks and Recreation office.
