Parks and Rec Commission Minutes 1/4/08
Minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
Friday, January 4, 2008

Present: Steve Slozak, Barry Cady and Dave Braskie
Also Present: Timothy Pascale, Director

Steve called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m.

Dave made a motion to accept the minutes from the December 10 meeting and Barry seconded. All in favor and the motion passed.

The commission received the current budget numbers from the director. We look to be in good shape so far as monies left in the budget.

The skate park remaining budget was discussed and the possibility of having an event at the opening in the spring. Tim told the commission that Faith Espisito was working on doing something but we need to leave money for repairs in the account.

The commission received a copy of the director’s report on the product Milorganite. This is a good product but would be too costly for our department.

Steve informed the other commissioners that himself as well as Tim and Secretary Jeanne Guertin attended the CORI training seminar. We are now recertified for 2 years.

Tim informed the commission that we received 1 free year of service from Konica because they made a mistake on the original contract.

The commission was informed that Steve Gordon has been hired to replace Courtney Gilligan as the 30 hour per week union laborer. We will look to fill the spot left vacant by Steve in the spring.

The commission received a copy of the new 2008 facilities tour. This is a book of all the areas we currently maintain as well as the proposed areas that we are negotiating taking over. The commission noticed the Fire Department grounds listed and Tim made them aware he had talked with the fire chief and had agreed to maintain the grounds around the station. We had maintained them up until the year 2000. Instead of the Fire Department buying new equipment it would be better for the town if we just took them over. This Tim feels would put us yet another step toward being a true grounds maintenance department something he feels the selectman are leaning toward.

The upcoming meeting with the selectman on Tuesday January 8, 2008 was discussed. We still are not sure that merging the Cemetery Department and Parks Department would be beneficial in saving labor, equipment or money but instead look at just expanding the Parks Department. This would take added labor and a bigger budget.

The next meeting will be Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at 5:30 p.m.

Dave made a motion to adjourn at 6:30 p.m. and Barry seconded. All in favor and motion passed.

Respectfully submitted,

Timothy Pascale
