MONSON CEMETERY COMMISSION
THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 2007
The regular meeting of the Monson Cemetery commissioners convened at 3:30 p.m. in the office at 32 Wilbraham Road. In attendance were Albert Wilcox, David Martin, Paul Lovell and Gaylin Bingle. Robert Pease did not attend this meeting. William Plante was also present.
Mr. Wilcox made a motion to accept the meeting minutes of February 1, 2007. Mr. Martin seconded the motion.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Seasonal Rate – Paul said he hasn’t checked into the rate of pay with downtown yet for the seasonal help as we really won’t have the funds for seasonal help until July first and the new budget.
2. Opening fees – Paul said he is still getting figures from neighboring towns on their rates. Palmer Cemetery and Bethany Cemetery are up to $500.00 for flush marker lots. Currently we are getting $250.00 for a flush marker lot and $350.00 for a monument lot. Paul feels we will have to increase the cost on both the flush marker and monument lots.
3. Fence at Main Street Cemetery – Paul said he hasn’t spoken with Dennis yet but still has time, as the CPA funds aren’t ready for disbursement yet.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Oil Tank – Mr. Wilcox made a motion to have the oil tank outside the building removed and to have a new tank installed inside the building at Hillcrest Cemetery by Larry’s Oil burner Service. Mr. Martin seconded the motion.
2. Columbarium – The Commissioners agreed Paul could get more information on a columbarium for Hillcrest Cemetery. Paul explained columbarium’s come in all different sizes and shapes. There is a 64-niche columbarium that would hold 168 cremation urns, two in each niche. This would also save on space as an eight-foot square space would hold all 168 cremations. This would be placed on the strip of land to the right side of the cemetery located behind the building. Paul said he would speak with cemetery’s that are currently using them, as cremations have been increasing. The cost of the niches would pay for the cost of the columbarium with possibly
enough funds left over to put down on the next columbarium once one is sold out. This would also be a huge saving for anyone purchasing a niche as the purchase price would include the cost of the niche, opening fee and name plaque on the front as compared to the cost of the grave, separate opening fee and then the cost for the marker or monument along with the footing fee required for its placement.
3. Brush Pile – Paul said the brush pile has been burnt. Mr. Martin said John Morrell told him when Paul is ready to do more clearing, he would send a man from the Highway Department with the chipper.
Mr. Wilcox made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:00 p.m. Mr. Martin seconded the motion.
