MONSON CEMETERY COMMISSION
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2007
The regular meeting of the Monson Cemetery Commissioners convened at 3:30 p.m. in the office at 32 Wilbraham Road. In attendance were Albert Wilcox, David Martin, Paul Lovell and Gaylin Bingle. Robert Pease did not attend this meeting. William Plante was also present.
Mr. Wilcox made a motion to accept the meeting minutes of January 4, 2007. Mr. Martin seconded the motion.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Budget – Mr. Martin said he did check into the employee pool and found out this is something the town is looking into doing, but not in this particular fiscal year. Mr. Martin also said there is $140,000.00 in the Cemetery Land Fund. The Commissioners approved the narration, which was written up to be included with the budget. The Commissioners also said for Paul to check into the salary for the seasonal help with downtown.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Electrical – It was agreed to have exterior lighting installed for safety and security.
2. Opening Fees – Mr. Martin said he feels our opening fees are low. He checked with Palmer and found that we are $200.00 to $300.00 cheaper. Paul said we tend to be compatible with the neighboring smaller towns such as Brimfield. Paul said he would call other towns to see what they are currently charging for opening fees.
3. Saturday Burials – Mr. Martin said he has spoken with Wendy Story of Beers & Story Funeral Home in Palmer and with Lessee Lombard Krzynowek, owner of Lombard Funeral Home. They both agreed a lot of people are upset with not having the option of having a burial on a Saturday as this makes it hard for people coming from out of town. Paul said if Saturday burials are reinstated, he would just like to leave it as burials only on Saturdays, locating and opening of graves would only be done on Monday through Friday.
4. Fence repair at Main Street Cemetery – Mr. Martin said he spoke with Dennis Swierad who said not to do anything just yet with the historic fence along the front of Main Street Cemetery, as he is hoping to get some funding through the newly created Community Preservation Act to help with the costs of this project. Mr. Swierad also suggested using a lime mix rather then a mortar mix on the repair of stonewalls so they won’t crack.
Mr. Wilcox made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 4:40 p.m. Mr. Martin seconded the vote.
