MONSON CEMETERY COMMISSION
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2005
The regular meeting of the Monson Cemetery Commissioners convened at 10:00 a.m. in the office at 32 Wilbraham Road. In attendance were Julian E. Szarlan, Albert T. Wilcox, Robert E. Pease, Paul B. Lovell and Gaylin G. Bingle.
The Recording Secretary read the meeting minutes of November 4, 2005. Mr. Pease made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Mr. Wilcox seconded the motion.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Snow Stakes – Paul said there were 15 to 20 snow stakes in the rebar he received from Mr. Pease. He spent $146.00 to purchase twenty, 20 -foot sections of rebar from Squiers. Paul was able to cut five 5-foot sections out of each piece in order to have enough pieces to complete the job.
2. Camera – Gaylin will pick up some film for the camera donated by Mr. Pease to see if it works. Mr. Szarlan said it would be great if it does work and that it is worth the chance as this is an item that has been needed for a long time.
3. Transmission – Paul said the transmission has made the noise a couple more times since the last meeting, but hated to have to go without the truck while it is being repaired, especially with snow in the forecast. The Commissioners agreed unanimously to have Paul bring the truck in to have the transmission checked to see if it might just need an adjustment before it gets any worse.
4. Veterans Marker – Paul said he spoke with the family and with the Veterans Agent about the up-right veterans marker he received not being allowed in Hillcrest Cemetery. Both parties agreed to see what could be done to comply with the Cemetery rules and regulations.
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Help – The Cemetery Department has been given a man from the Highway Department for four to six weeks. He has been on out of work on Workman’s Compensation from an injury to his back and has been told he can return to work on light duty only. John Morrell has stated the Highway Department doesn’t have any work that qualifies as light duty. Paul met with Gretchen Neggers and John Morrell and all three parties agreed to have the employee do light duty work at the Cemetery Department sharpening blades, changing oil in the mowers, spreading weed killer around the monuments, etc., and to learning how the department is operated since the Cemetery
Department is out of a full time employee following the resignation of it’s Assistant Superintendent. The employee will be working eight hours a day, five days per week with the exception of the time he needs off for doctor’s appointments.
2. Clerk's Hours - Paul said he would like to increase the clerk's hours from ten hours to fifteen hours allowing her to work four mornings a week instead of three. This will allow the office to remain open on Friday mornings when he is out in the cemeteries to assist people coming into the office and to answer the telephone. The Commissioners agreed unanimously. Mr. Wilcox made a motion to allow Gaylin to work fifteen hours per week. Mr. Pease seconded the motion.
Mr. Szarlan announced he would not be running for re-election when his term on the Cemetery Commission expires in April. Mr. Pease and Mr. Wilcox commended Mr. Szarlan for the great job he has done while serving on the Board of Cemetery Commissioners and said they will be sorry to lose him and agreed he has been an asset to the Board over the many years he has served.
Mr. Pease made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 10:50 a.m. Mr. Wilcox seconded the motion.
Respectfully Submitted,
Gaylin Bingle
Recording Secretary
