CEMETERY COMMISSIONERS MEETING OF JUNE 4, 2004
PRESENT: Robert E. Pease, Julian E. Szarlan, Albert Wilcox, Paul B. Lovell and Gaylin Bingle. John R. Nothe was not present.
Mr. Pease called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the clerk and accepted with a motion by Mr. Szarlan and seconded by Mr. Wilcox.
Reorganization of Commission: Mr. Wilcox made a motion to keep Mr. Pease as the Chairman and Mr. Szarlan as Vice Chairman, leaving Albert Wilcox to fill the position as the member. Mr. Szarlan and Mr. Pease seconded the motion.
OLD BUSINESS:
Computer – Paul said our department was level funded for FY “05 and that he would purchase the new computer after July 1st.
Maps – Paul said he is waiting until after Memorial Day to do something with making copies of the maps.
Chairs – The two new office chairs were purchased at Staples for a cost of $89.00 each with an additional $5.00 each for assembly.
C-Pins – Paul said he will wait until the next fiscal year to order the pins unless he uses funds from the Gifts and Bequest Account and encumbers this bill. There are only two or three c-pins left. The Commissioners agreed if they are needed to order them now. Paul said he would try to hold off until after July 1st.
NEW BUSINESS:
The Commissioners welcomed Al Wilcox to the Commission.
Letter for Bus – Mr. Wilcox suggested writing a letter from the Commissioners thanking Mr. Hasenjager for his many years as a Cemetery Commissioner. After a brief discussion it was agreed the letter should come from the Board of Selectmen. Gaylin will check into this.
Increase Footing Fees – Paul said he would like to go up on the footing fees as there hasn’t been an increase in the fees for awhile now. Mr. Pease said he wasn’t in favor of raising the prices and suggested only raising it a little bit now and then again in the future. Mr. Szarlan said he just wanted to stay current with other towns and that he isn’t out to hurt anyone. Mr. Szarlan made a motion to increase the footing costs from $20.00 per square surface foot on flat flush markers to $40.00 per square surface foot. Also to increase the fees from $30.00 per square surface foot on monuments to $60.00 per square surface foot. Mr. Pease seconded the motion.
Birch Tree – Paul said there is a birch tree in Hillcrest Cemetery that will be cut down shortly as half has been cut and the tree didn’t come back at all. After July 1st Paul would like to get someone in here to stump the tree. There are graves on each side which have killed the tree. Mr. Szarlan suggested leaving the stump, cut as close as possible to the ground and make a flower garden there. Paul said he doesn’t have the time or manpower to maintain another garden and would like to plant another tree there. This birch tree was taken out of the woods and took really well. Mr. Szarlan said he just couldn’t see paying $200.00 to pluck a stump. Paul added he didn’t think our backhoe would do the job with all the roots. Mr. Szarlan said when a
tree is stumped they only go down three inches or so and the stump would still be there. It was agreed to try to get the Highway Department to see if they could remove the stump. Paul said he would ask.
Loam – Pete Lloyd has loam for $16.00 per yard and Paul would like two loads at Hillside. The last time loam was ordered, Mr. Lloyd dumped everything at Hillcrest. It was agreed for Paul to purchase two loads of loam.
Tractor – the supports for the roof on the tractor broke. Hamm’s Welding fixed it for a cost of $65.00. One support was missed and will need to be fixed as well.
Mr. Szarlan made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 10:05 a.m. Mr. Pease seconded the motion.
Respectfully Submitted,
Gaylin Bingle
