Meeting of 2001-08/15
BOARD OF HEALTH
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2001

The regular meeting of the Board of Health convened at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Lucy Shrenker, Jane Jacobs, Dr. Richard Smith, Richard Klick and Robert Bator.

The minutes of the August 1, 2001 meeting were discussed and corrections were made for Gaylin to retype for approval at the next meeting.

Ms. Shrenker said she met with Arleen Miller regarding the MRIP Grant, going through the whole thing with her and checking on how it should be filled out this year. Ms. Shrenker said the town needs to increase the tonnage of recycled materials in order to meet the 2001/2001 MRIP grant requirements, and the schools really need to get involved to reach this goal. Ms. Shrenker stated a lot of money is available this year in grants. The Board of Health could get a storage shed approximately 8’ X 12’ and is worth  $2,000.00. Mr. Klick said he spoke with Selectman Edward Harrison, and it’s okay with him. The Fire Chief, Elmer Harris, said the shed could be set on property at the Fire Station. Ms. Shrenker said it sounded like the Board of Health has a good chance of receiving the storage shed as well as a 500-gallon oil tank. Mr. Klick said the oil tank would fill up fast on Hazardous Waste Day, and room would still be needed to store 50-gallon drums. Ms. Shrenker also stated, before September 1st a site would have to be found for it.

Also, there is a computer-recycling grant, which is still being negotiated. Ms. Shrenker said as soon as school starts, the Board of Health members would set up a time to sit down with Arleen Miller for her to walk the Board through the grants. It was agreed unanimously to try to apply for everything, which is available to the town.

Ms. Shrenker said there was trouble with the letter Mr. Bator wrote to the Housing Authority. It looked like a conflict of interest. Ms. Shrenker said this is not an easy case, as at this time it was agreed, the woman needs her birds. Mr. Klick said her neighbors aren’t complaining, it’s other tenants. Also, no one has written a letter to the Board of Health. It was agreed if someone has a complaint, they should put it in writing to the Board of Health Committee.

It was agreed on unanimously, that all letters would be proof read and signed by the entire committee, or if time sensitive, by the Chairman or Vice Chairman in his or her absence. It was also agreed, all letters shall be typed and a copy filed with our secretary. Copies of any written communication from the Board of Health shall be included in each member’s packet.

Ms. Jacobs said no dead birds have been tested from Monson yet.

Ms. Shrenker said she received a letter from Kevin Pelissier. Mr. Pelissier has started a Monson Web Page and was wondering, if the Board of Health would like him to post any information relative to health matters on the site for the people of Monson. It was agreed to have Gaylin send a letter to Mr. Pelissier inviting him to either the September 5th meeting or the September 19th meeting for a few minutes to explain his web page, answer any questions and maybe set something up.

It was agreed to have Gaylin write a letter to Roger Harris asking him to attend the September 5th meeting at 8:00 p.m. to discuss his trash abatement request. The Tax Collector, Dot Jenkins, was asked previously to attend the meeting on September 5th at 7:30 p.m. to discuss this issue.

P & F told Mr. Klick they would not be picking up metal anymore on Bulky Day. The dumpsters come with the contact and cost a lot more. Ms. Shrenker asked Mr. Klick, what if we had it hauled to P & F. Mr. Klick said he might accept it then. Mr. Klick also said Woloshchuk Enterprises might take the metal to P & F.  He said he would talk with P & F and with Woloshchuk Enterprises to see what can be done and to lock in the date of October 20th. Mr. Klick said they won’t take air conditioners or refrigerators due to the freeon.  Lucy asked Gaylin to call Arleen Miller to see if Hazardous Waste Day had been advertised and Mr. Klick asked Gaylin to ask Ms. Miller about the batteries.

Ms. Jacobs said the jackets she is checking into don’t come in yellow. Ms. Shrenker suggested maybe something in blue as she has seen yellow on people and they blend into the flowers and background and don’t show up.  Dr. Smith said the jackets could be purchased anywhere and brought to A 2 Z Embroidery at 2133 Boston Road in Wilbraham to have them embroidered.  Ms. Jacobs said she would see what she could do and check with the embroidery company Dr. Smith suggested.

Correspondence was gone over and all the bills were signed.

Ms. Jacobs made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:05 p.m.; Mr. Bator seconded the motion.

Respectfully Submitted,

Gaylin Bingle
Recording Secretary
