SELECTMEN’S MEETING                  TUESDAY, MAY 2, 2006           6:30 P.M.   

In attendance:   James G. Mullen, Jr., John M. Shields, Marion V. McEttrick, , David A. Colton, Town Administrator, Annemarie Fagan, Assistant Town Administrator and Paula Rizzi, Executive Secretary


The meeting was convened at 6:30 p.m. in the Workroom of the Main Office of the high school.

David Colton reported to the Board that he had met with the Police Chief, Fire Chief, DPW Director and Superintendent of Schools to discuss possible further reductions in their FY 07 budgets.  The following reductions were agreed upon:  Police, Fire and DPW budgets will each be reduced by $40,000 and the Town’s Insurance General Budget will be reduced by $100,000 for a total of $220,000.  The Superintendent of Schools agreed to propose a $330,000 reduction to the School Committee for its approval.

The Board met with members of the Warrant Committee at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed budget reductions and a recommendation to postpone action on all financial articles until the Warrant Committee has had time to review the proposed reductions.

The Board of Selectmen and the Warrant Committee were joined by members of the School Committee, Superintendent of Schools Magdalene Giffune, Assistant Superintendents Mary Gormley and Paul Hylton and Town Accountant David Grab.  Paul Hogan, chair of the School Committee, informed all present that the School Committee had agreed to the proposed $330,000 reduction to the School Department budget and that this agreement was reached in the spirit of a one referendum question.

The Warrant Committee voted unanimously to postpone action on all financial articles until it has a chance to meet with the Police Chief, Fire Chief, DPW Director and the Superintendent of Schools to discuss the proposed cuts to their budgets.

The Board of Selectmen and the School Committee agreed to meet on Thursday, May 4th at 6:00 p.m.

John Michael Shields moved, Marion V. McEttrick seconded and the Board voted unanimously to recess until the commencement of Town Meeting.

The Board of Selectmen reconvened its meeting with the School Committee in the Superintendent’s Conference Room to discuss the FY 07 Town Budget.

At 11:50 p.m. John M. Shields moved and Marion V. McEttrick seconded that the Board of Selectmen commit to combine with the School Committee to support a $2.45 million override and following a Town Meeting vote to write one ballot question.  The vote was unanimous.

There was a brief discussion on the presentation of the budget on Thursday night.

John M. Shields moved, Marion V. McEttrick seconded and the Board voted unanimously to adjourn at 10:45 p.m.
