BOARD OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES MEETING
TUESDAY, JANUARY 13, 2015
MASHPEE LIBRARY CONFERENCE ROOM



Present: Carlo D’Este, John Kowalski, Mark Wright, Kate Milde, Chip Bishop, and Hugh Ahearn (arrived 5 p.m.)

Absent:  Mary LeClair.


Also Present:  Kathy Mahoney – Library Director
                    Mike Richardson – Board of Selectmen
        
Carlo D’Este, Chairman, called the meeting to order at 4 p.m.
 
Approval of Minutes

Chip Bishop motioned to approve the Regular Meeting minutes of December 9, 2014 as written.
Motion was seconded by John Kowalski.
VOTE:  Yes-4; 1-abstain.

Friends of the Mashpee Public Library

Kate Milde reported that:

  • Friends are getting ready for their “fun” project—namely a cocktail party on June 18, 2015 from 5-7 p.m.  They are attempting to get 10 live auction items; they have a lot of other items available for a silent auction.
  • Currently Friends have $10,750 in donations for the tech fund.
  • Friends looking for a corresponding secretary.  They have someone who took over the membership aspect.
  • Friends working on getting out their membership information.  Kathy Mahoney commented that the mailing labels are here so they can get the letter out.
Reports

Kathy Mahoney’s Library Director’s Report for January was reviewed and discussed.  

  • Kathy Mahoney reported they had 5 candidates for the part-time circulation position and the interviews were done yesterday.  Kathy sent over top 3 choices and recommendation to H.R. today.  Kathy said the first choice has a lot of experience.
  • Kathy going ahead with purchasing iPads.  Kathy met with the owner of iCape store in Mashpee Commons, and he is preparing price quotes.
  • Kathy said she is working on an Archives grant with the Historical Committee.
  • Kathy said 2 groups planning to build libraries (Brewster and Kingston) were here and were impressed with out Library building.

Article for Town Meeting

Kathy provided the Trustees with a Draft Article for May 2015 Town Meeting Warrant asking Town vote to re-authorize the $15,000 Library Revolving Account.
Motion:  Chip Bishop motioned to approve submitting the Article for May 2015 Town Meeting Warrant.  Mark Wright seconded the motion.

Communications

Mike Richardson …provided the following update:

  • Budget process – Town in good shape this year.
  • Mike said he attended a session at the school and it was impressive to hear how much the students are enjoying and learning with iPads.
  • Waste Management Committee held its first meeting on January 6.  Committee has 14 members.
  • Waterways--grant given to “save the spit” project.
  • Town Manager and members of the Board of Selectmen will be going to Boston to attend the Massachusetts Municipal program.  Mike said he will be going; he attended this program before and it is very worthwhile.
  • Mashpee Cares meeting tomorrow morning at Town Hall with Town and some students.
  • Mike to meet with Chief Police Rodney Collins to discuss use of cameras by police topic.
Corresponding Secretary…Nothing to report.

Advocacy Subcommittee

Chip Bishop began by congratulating Kathy Mahoney on putting a lot of the Library statistics in the Library Mashpee Enterprise column.  Chip says it shows we’re growing; technically smart; and working with the Tribe.

Chip asked Kathy whether hosting the CLAMS Legislative Breakfast would provide an opportunity for the Library to speak to the audience.  Kathy said we could find some patrons to speak—for instance some patrons from Community Connections.

Discussion

Carlo D’Este provided the Trustees with a brief write-up he drafted explaining the Plymouth 400th Anniversary.  Carlo asked the Trustees to consider whether or not the Library would be interested in displaying the traveling exhibit display from after July 4, 2015 to about August 2-3.  A copy of the draft write-up is attached to the printed set of these minutes.

Next Meeting …4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 in Library Conference Room.

Adjournment

Hugh Ahearn motioned the meeting be adjourned; Kate Milde seconded the motion; and it was unanimously passed.  The meeting adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
