NEW BUSINESS
- Appointment of Finance Committee Member to the School Committee Search Committee
Mark Davini reviewed for the committee the tentative makeup of the Search Committee for the new School Superintendent. School Committee Chairman Jose Franco has proposed a 12-member search committee consisting of two School Committee members; one Mashpee Board of Selectmen representative; one Finance Committee member; 3 teachers, one from each Mashpee School; one member of the Wampanoag Tribe; two parents of children in the school district; one member of the Special Education department. The Search Committee will be reviewing applications received from interested candidates. Tentative plans are for scheduling 5 to 7 meetings, 2 hours in length, with completion of the review process by January 10, 2013.
Mr. James Hardy, a consultant with the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC), has been hired to conduct two Focus Groups to gather public opinion and guide the selection process. Mr. Hardy will be looking at qualifications, including salary level, that the Search Committee is looking for.
Mr. Hardy has indicated that a Screening Committee, to be comprised of two at-large community members and three parents along with the School Committee, will begin meeting on February 13, 2013 for one week to review superintendent candidate resumes and select semifinalists. Beginning February 25, 2013, the Screening Committee will interview the semifinalist candidates. The Mashpee School Committee has the final choice of the superintendent, which vote will take place on March 27, 2013.
Discussion followed as to whom among the committee members was best able to represent the Finance Committee on the Search Committee.
Theresa Cook made a motion that Mark Davini represent the Finance Committee on the Search Committee for the new School Superintendent. Oskar Klenert seconded the motion. The motion was approved 6-0 (one member absent).
Charles Gasior reminded the committee that budget hearings begin next week. Sal DiBuono requested that he sit in on some of the departmental budget meetings with Joyce Mason, for his own edification.
Charles Gasior will send a letter to the School Committee advising them of the Finance Committee member to be represented on the Search Committee.
Mark Davini gave a brief summary of the School Committee proposed budget for 2014, indicating that 2014 may see an increase in the number of pupils; the biggest line item continues to be salaries.
