JULY 8, 2015
Present: Council on Aging Members Irving Goldberg, Jack Jordan, Jean Noussee, Virginia McIntyre, Mary Gaffney, Ernest Cornelssen, Council on Aging Director Lynne Waterman, Outreach Coordinator Darlene Perkins.

Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 8:35 a.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES – June 10, 2015
Motion: Jack Jordan moved to approve the minutes of June 10, 2015, seconded by Jean Noussee. Vote unanimous 6-0

COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE
DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Director Lynne Waterman distributed her report for the month of June.
The Director reported she met with the leaders of several activities to get updates with how they are operating and to plan for their summer and fall sessions. She announced that the Mashpee Council on Aging received an award from AARP in Massachusetts in appreciation for the support we have given them in hosting their Smart Driver courses at the Mashpee Senior Center.
The Director said there were no issues with the van this past month. She reported the annual inspection of the kitchen fire suppression system and the building alarm were recently done and the annual inspection of the first aid kits and defibrillator were performed. She noted the tank that is over the stove may have to be replaced next year as well as the defibrillator.
The Director reported on the meetings she attended: The Parkinson’s Support Network of Cape Cod Board of Directors and Programs Committee, (COAST) (Cape Cod Senior Center Directors), Mashpee Human Services Committee, Staff, Mashpee Cares, Mashpee Cultural Council and Elder Services Mature Workers Supervisor’ Annual Meeting, The Director along with the Outreach Coordinator met with staff from the Wampanoag Tribal Council to discuss working together to benefit seniors in the community.
The Director thanked the Volunteer Coordinator Deborah Converse for organizing another successful volunteer recognition luncheon. She reported she completed the annual evaluation for the Principal Clerk. She noted she participated in a focus group sponsored by the Department of Labor on older women workers and their challenges. She also met with several property tax work off candidates. She said that she, the Outreach Coordinator and the Principal Clerk updated the newsletter mailing process and the Mature Worker completed the annual update of the entire mailing list.
The Director stated her goals were to write the formula grant, begin office files annual clean out and continue update of the shared computer drive.

TREASURER’S REPORT
The Director reported there was no printed report but the year end report will be distributed at their next meeting.
OUTREACH COORDINATOR REPORT
Darlene Perkins distributed her report for the month of June. The Outreach Coordinator reported she interviewed volunteers who are interested in working with residents. She also reported she attended the Aging with Dignity Conference which focused on aging and addiction. The Keynote speaker Jeffery Samet, MD, did a great job presenting the last 20 years of research on addiction and how it affects us as we age. Barbara Koffske presented information on nutrition and how our needs differ as we age. The speakers and the workshops gave an understanding as to how our needs differ as we age and helped give an understanding to how both medications and support groups can work together to help with sobriety and sustaining the sobriety. The Outreach Coordinator is also participating in the
selection process of the nutrition providers for Elder Services Meals on Wheels and congregate dining.
The Coordinator noted two home visits were made this month and numerous client contacts by telephone and visits in the office. Her home visits included meeting with Mashpee residents reviewing policies and procedures for the use of our van and volunteer transportation. Her office visits included working with many of the residents of 55 plus communities who are starting to age and are in need of services to help them stay in the community. She noted many of our fragile elders who have middle income are in need of a variety of services but cannot afford to pay for the amount of services they need to stay safe in their homes. She said most seniors need help with medical treatment, support and transportation.
The Outreach Coordinator said the Brown Bag program served twenty eight people this month and thanked the five volunteers helped with this program. The Coordinator reported she meets monthly with volunteers and 5 Mashpee residents turned 90 plus and received flowers delivered by a volunteer. She is in the process of training a new volunteer to help with Fuel Assistance and the Benefits Checkup. A new SHINE volunteer is helping Mashpee seniors with medical insurance during the months of July and August. The Coordinator reviewed the meetings she attended: Elder Services of Cape Cod and Islands Board of Directors, Cape Outreach Coordinator’s monthly meeting, the Director of the Department of Transitional Assistance.
Motion: Jean Noussee moved to accept the Outreach Coordinator’s Report, seconded by Jack Jordan. Vote unanimous 6-0
VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR REPORT
The Director distributed the Volunteer Coordinator Report. The Volunteer Coordinator reported she and the volunteer committee have been assessing the Volunteer Recognition and discussing changes that might happen and stated she is still welcoming suggestions. She reported she has posted on the walls of the Senior Center collages of volunteers in action and will continue to take pictures of volunteers at work. She noted 5 new volunteers have been enrolled in June and the scrapbooks are available for viewing in the Library. The estimate of the volunteer hours for last year is 9,670.
Motion: Jean Noussee moved to accept the Volunteer Coordinator Report, seconded by Mary Gaffney. Vote unanimous 6-0
ACTIVITY COORDINATOR REPORT
Director Waterman distributed the Activity Coordinator Report for June and highlighted several programs: Investigating and Solving Actual Crimes on Cape Cod, Current Events Discussion, Massachusetts AARP Safe Driving Program, Caregivers 101, Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, Dining Around, 6os Social Club, Wedding Vows Renewal, Movies, and Aerobics for the Brain.
Motion: Jeanne Nousse moved to accept the Activity Coordinator Report, seconded by Jack Jordan. Vote unanimous 6-0
Old Business
The Director reminded the COA board members whose terms were up at the end of June to sign appointment book.
New Business
The Director gave an update on the Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging.
They were successful in moving the $8 figure in the formula grant increase to $9 and are hoping to have the senior centers offer new programs.
Motion: Ernie Cornelssen moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Jean Noussee. Vote unanimous 6-0
