                                       COUNCIL ON AGING MINUTES
                                                  May 13, 2015

Present:  Council on Aging Members Irving Goldberg, Jack Jordan, Jean Noussee, Virginia McIntyre, Norah McCormick, Mary Gaffney, Ernest Cornelssen, Council on Aging Director Lynne Waterman, Outreach Coordinator Darlene Perkins.

Absent:  Marijo Gorney

Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 8:32 a.m.


APPROVAL OF MINUTES – April 8, 2015

Motion: Ernie Cornelssen moved to approve the minutes of April 8, 2015, seconded by Jack Jordan.   Vote unanimous 7-0

COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE


DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Director Lynne Waterman distributed her report for the month of April

Lynne stated she met with the ALL instructor to discuss a possible summer class.  Lynne also met with the Activity Coordinator to plan several programs for the summer.  

There were no issues with the van.

The Director thanked the DPW staff for their excellent work in cleaning up the grounds and mulching for the spring.

The Director reviewed the meetings she attended:  Staff, Department Head, Parkinson’s Support Network of Cape Cod, Board of Directors, Mashpee Human Services, Mashpee Cares, COAST (Cape Cod Senior Center Directors) and van drivers monthly meeting.  She also participated in a focus group on substance abuse, hosted by Barnstable County Health and Human Services.

The Director and Van Drivers trained two new substitute van drivers.

The Director and staff met to discuss the reorganization of the main shared computer drive and the Director is working closely with the office assistant on this project which is anticipated to take several months.  The Director and Outreach Coordinator met with a social worker from another town who is establishing a friendly visitor program to discuss  Mashpee’s program.

Lynne stated her goals are to continue training new substitute van drivers, continue updating of computer, plan gardening project and plan fall programs.

The Director distributed a release from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts announcing the new Secretary of Elder Affairs, Alice Bonner, PHD, RN, who will begin her role on June 1.

The Director also distributed a Directory of Service Providers for Elders which is also on the town’s website, an informational sheet on number of senior citizens in the workforce and a handout prepared by the Affordable Housing Committee.

Motion:  Mary Gaffney moved to accept the Director’s Report, seconded by Jack Jordan.  Vote unanimous 7-0

TREASURER’S REPORT

Director Waterman distributed the budget report and reviewed the budget figures with the members.

Motion:  Virginia McIntyre moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Jean Noussee. Vote unanimous 7-0

OUTREACH COORDINATOR REPORT

Darlene Perkins distributed her report for the month of April.  She stated the last month was very busy working with seniors filling out fuel assistant applications, the deadline has been extended to May 15.  She also participated in Mashpee Police Department presentation introducing the different agencies in Mashpee that service the community.  Darlene also informed the members that she met with the Postmaster to discuss a new program and distributed a letter which explains that a sticker would be placed in any senior’s mailbox who wishes to participate.  If the mail deliverer sees five days of mail accumulated in the mailbox, a call will be made to the Outreach Coordinator, who will check on the senior.  She also distributed a Mail Box Sticker Program Information Form to be filled out by any senior who wants to participate.

The Outreach Coordinator reviewed the home visits made in addition to numerous client contacts by telephone and visits to the office.  She said they are working with seniors in need of finding affordable housing.  The Brown Bag program served 27 seniors this month with the help of five volunteers.  She continues to make referrals for homecare, medical insurance, housing, food, and many daily activities to seniors who are struggling to stay sustainable within the community.  
The Outreach coordinator is meeting monthly with volunteers:  matching friendly visitors with isolated seniors, the library lady, a friendly visitor coordinator and a new SHINE councilor.  7 Mashpee residents turned 90+ and received flowers delivered by a volunteer.

The Coordinator reviewed the meetings she attended:  Elder Services Board of Directors meeting, MCOA Outreach Summit and the public nurse.  

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Outreach Coordinator’s Report, seconded by Ginny McIntyre.  Vote unanimous 7-0

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR REPORT

The Director reviewed the Volunteer Coordinator’s report for April.  She said scrapbooks have been updated by a volunteer and organized by the Mature Worker.  The updated books are in the library and are available to the seniors.

The Volunteer Coordinator attended a Volunteer Fair in Falmouth.

The Volunteer Coordinator continues to work on the Volunteer Recognition luncheon.  Invitations were sent out on May 11.
 
Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Volunteer Coordinator Report, seconded by Mary Gaffney.  Vote unanimous 7-0

ACTIVITY COORDINATOR REPORT

        Director Waterman stated there is no written report from the Activity Coordinator but she reported the Activity Coordinator is working on a wedding program and a history program.


Old Business

The Director distributed an Affordable Housing Committee brochure.

The Director stated she forwarded Jack Dorsey’s resignation to the Selectmen and they will be accepting the resignation at an upcoming meeting and then will advertise the vacancy.  

New Business

The Director announced that the Senior Center won the AARP State Driving Program Award

The Chairman suggested having a nominating committee for the election of officers for the Council for the upcoming year.  The nominating committee members are Jack Jordan, Jean Noussee, and Ernie Cornelssen.


Motion:  Ernie Cornelssen moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Jean Noussee.  Vote unanimous 7-0
