                                       COUNCIL ON AGING MINUTES
                                                  February 11, 2015

Present:  Council on Aging Members Irving Goldberg, Jack Jordan, Marijo Gorney, Jean Noussee, Jack Dorsey, Ernest Cornelssen, Council on Aging Director Lynne Waterman, Outreach Coordinator Darlene Perkins.

Absent:  Virginia McIntyre, Norah McCormick and Mary Gaffney.

Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 8:33 a.m.


APPROVAL OF MINUTES – January 14, 2015

Motion: Ernie Cornelssen moved to approve the minutes of January 14, 2015, seconded by Marijo Gorney.   Vote unanimous 6-0

COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE


DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Director Lynne Waterman distributed her report for the month of January.  

Lynne stated she and the Activity Coordinator worked together to plan spring programs and she also met with a representative from a health care organization to plan a future program.

The Director noted the heater in the van was repaired.  She thanked the DPW for repairing the building’s heating system after the blizzard.

The Director reviewed the meetings she attended:  Parkinson’s Support Network of Cape Cod, Board of Directors, Department Head and Staff monthly meetings.  She also reported that she, the Outreach Coordinator, and the van drivers met to review van policies and procedures.  The Director also met with the Mashpee Garden Club to discuss decorations for next year’s holiday season.

The Director stated she trained the new mature worker who began her duties as the afternoon receptionist.  This position is funded by Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.  She also announced that the new office assistant was hired.

The Director along with the Volunteer Coordinator met with a volunteer who agreed to prepare a written history of the Mashpee Council on Aging. She conducted a tour of the Senior Center for the Sandwich Council on Aging.

The Director noted her goals were to train the new office assistant and begin preparing for the annual volunteer recognition event.

Motion:  Jack Dorsey moved to accept the Director’s Report, seconded by Jack Dorsey.  Vote unanimous 6-0

TREASURER’S REPORT

Director Waterman distributed the budget report and reviewed the budget figures with the members.

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Jack Dorsey. Vote unanimous 6-0

OUTREACH COORDINATOR REPORT

Darlene Perkins distributed her report for the month of January.  She noted she was able to update all of the emergency preparedness lists and continually provide this information through the newsletter and presentations at the senior center.  She said thankfully the storm did not affect the quality of life or safety of our seniors in Mashpee.

The Outreach Coordinator distributed handouts on Money Follows the Person which is a program through Elder Services that supports the initiative of the state and federal government to assist individuals moving to the community from nursing facilities.
The Coordinator noted six home visits were made during the month and numerous client contacts were made by telephone and visits to the office.

The Coordinator stated they are working with seniors in need to find affordable housing with referrals, filling out applications, and helping with some rent assistance.  The Brown Bag program served 27 seniors this month with the help of six volunteers separating and bagging the food.  She also noted there are two men volunteers who will be helping with pick up and delivery of the food.

Darlene stated she is meeting monthly with volunteers, 11 Mashpee residents turned 90+ and received flowers delivered by a volunteer.  She is matching up new Friendly Volunteers with seniors who are isolated and need a friend to visit them regularly.  She trained a volunteer to help residents fill out Benefits Checkup applications.

The Coordinator reviewed the meetings she attended:  Mashpee Hoarding Task Force and Cape Outreach Coordinator’s monthly meeting.

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Outreach Coordinator’s Report, seconded by Jack Dorsey.  Vote unanimous 6-0




VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR REPORT

The Director reviewed the Volunteer Coordinator’s report for January.  The Volunteer Coordinator has contacted all of the Senior Center volunteers.
  
Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Volunteer Coordinator Report, seconded by Jack Jordan.  Vote unanimous 6-0

ACTIVITY COORDINATOR REPORT

        Director Waterman reviewed the Activity Coordinator report for the month of January.      She highlighted several of the programs and noted the new activities that are planned.

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Activity Coordinator Report, seconded by Jack Dorsey.  Vote unanimous 6-0

Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging

The Director reviewed the Massachusetts Council on Aging Newsletter.  

Motion:  Ernie Cornelssen moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Jean Noussee.  Vote unanimous 6-0
