COUNCIL ON AGING MINUTES
OCTOBER 10, 2013

Present:  Council on Aging Members Irving Goldberg, Virginia McIntyre, Jack Jordan, Lynne Waterman, Council on Aging Director, and Darlene Perkins, Outreach Coordinator

Absent:  Nora McCormack, Jean Noussee, Marijo Gorney, Mary Gaffney, Jack Dorsey,

Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 8:35 a.m.

No Quorum present, therefore, no votes were taken.

COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Director Lynne Waterman distributed her report for the month of September.  She highlighted her meeting with the Activity Coordinator and the staff from Tufts Health Care to plan a program with Chef Peggy Egan.  They also met with a new fitness instructor to plan a program with a new chair fitness program and a new French language instructor.  They also met with staff from the military base regarding the organization of a movie club.

Lynne stated she is still trying to resolve the beeper issue on the van.  The CCRTA will be looking at the issue.  She has revised the distribution schedule of the newsletter.  They moved from 5 sites to seventeen sites where the newsletter will be delivered.  She has been working on the Senior Property Tax Work-Off Program updating forms, applications and job descriptions, which began on October 1.

Lynne discussed the updated Behavioral Policies and Procedures and noted changes that were made.

Dean Turner Proposal

Dean Turner was present from the Mashpee Congregational Church.  He said they are active in supporting the Boys and Girls Club, The Babysitter of Cape Cod and the Mashpee Food Pantry.  He noted they are involved in many fundraisers.  Mr. Turner spoke about the Cash for Causes fundraiser.  He distributed some literature to the members.  His request was to get approval to set up a Cash for Causes table in the Senior Center for maybe two hours a week and if the Senior Center could use these cards for what they spend on food and gas.   Chairman  Goldberg noted that according to the Senior Center policy, they are not able to participate in any fundraiser with any church or church organization.  The Council thanked him for attending the meeting.  Mr. Turner left the meeting.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Director Waterman distributed the Treasurer’s report as of the end of August.  She discussed the energy line item and how they expect an increase in energy costs.  Cape Light Compact will be coming into the center to do an energy assessment.

OUTREACH COORDINATOR’S REPORT

Darlene Perkins, Outreach Coordinator, distributed her report for September.  She discussed her home visits and her office visits.  She also spoke about the Big Fix program.  12 homes were chosen for repairs and 10 were seniors.  Lynne and Darlene participated and several volunteers from Council on Aging staff also participated.  She said it was a fantastic community situation with 325 volunteers.  Director Waterman  wanted to mention Bob Morton who drove the vehicle and thanks to Darlene who did a lot with the clients.  Darlene also met with the police department and had her monthly meeting with the volunteers.  She also has been meeting with the Director and the van drivers on building the ridership.  Darlene noted some of the other meetings she attended,  Hoarding Task Force, Elder Services, Outreach Coordinator’s monthly meeting.

Darlene shared her first Brown Bag experience.  Bob Morton drove the van to pick up the goods and wanted to thank him.  Virginia McIntyre and Jeanne Noussee were great in helping with the effort.  There were 17 participants.

Darlene also shared that she attended the Mass Council on Aging Conference and distributed the power point slides they presented.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR REPORT

Director Waterman distributed the Volunteer Coordinator report and reviewed the report with the council members.  She highlighted the new volunteers and the review of the volunteer list, and the flu clinic to be held at the Christ the King on October 21.

ACTIVITY COORDINATOR REPORT

Director Waterman distributed the Activity Coordinator report.   Christine is planning a weight control program with the VNA and tips from the Golf Pro.  The Genesis luncheon was well attended with 75 participants and a Mashpee Housing Authority offered a program on September 27 and answered questions regarding housing and applications.
