COUNCIL ON AGING MINUTES
JULY 10, 2013



Present:  Council on Aging members Irving Goldberg, Jack Jordan,  Jean Noussee, Marijo Gorney, Jack Dorsey, Norah McCormick, Mary Gaffney,  Lynne Waterman, Council on Aging Director, and Darlene Perkins, Outreach Coordinator


Absent:  Virginia McIntyre

Chairman Irving Goldberg opened the meeting at 8:30 a.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES – June 12, 2013

Motion:  Jack Jordan moved to accept the minutes of June 12, 2013.  Seconded by Jean Noussee.  Vote unanimous.

COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE

DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Director Lynne Waterman distributed and reviewed her report highlighting the use of the building.  She met with the new leader of one of the bridge groups to review the policies and procedures regarding the use of the building.  She noted they have outside groups approaching her to use the building.  There was a discussion regarding the policies and procedures regarding people who are renting space.  The members agreed to revisit the policy and establish a subcommittee consisting of Lynne Waterman, Irving Goldberg, Mary Gaffney, Jean Noussee and Norah McCormick.

Director Waterman met with the local life coach which funds programs to reduce seniors’ anxiety and depression.  She met with the town’s former Human Resources Director who agreed to assist them in running the Wisdom Works program which helps seniors who are unemployed and seeking work.

Lynne revised the daily van log in order to help the drivers plan their daily schedule  She also met with all the drivers to inform them of the new drive along policy.

Lynne stated the key project is now complete and thanked the volunteer who assisted with this project.  She and the Outreach Coordinator and the Principal Clerk now each have a key box containing appropriate keys.

Lynne also developed and finalized a list detailing all the inspections that are done on a regular basis in the building and equipment   The Board of Health has done the annual inspection in the kitchen and the annual inventory of the building was completed and submitted to the town.  She thanked the garden volunteers and the custodian who planted the flowers in the pots at the entrance and on the patio.  She renewed the memorial leaf and brink program and one leaf was purchased and installed in June.

Director Waterman met with the volunteer who has been assembling scrapbooks for years to express her appreciation for a job well done.  She also attended several meetings with the Mashpee Cares, department heads, Parkinson’s Support Network of Cape Cod, the annual formula grant training, Fallon Health Care, local geriatric care manager and did a presentation at Southport with Darlene Perkins on the programs and services of the Mashpee Council on Aging.

She noted her short term goals were to plan new programs for October, revise room request packages, and obtain patio furniture with funding from the Friends of the Council on Aging.  She thanked Jean and the Friends of the Seniors for their contribution for the patio furniture.

Motion:  Jean Noussee moved to accept the Director’s Report, seconded by Jack Dorsey.  Vote unanimous.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Lynne distributed the budget report.  She reviewed the operating budget and noted the end of the Fiscal Year is June 30.  She also noted the budget numbers for 2014.

Motion:  Jack Jordan moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report, second by Jean Noussee.  Vote unanimous.

OUTREACH COORDINATOR’S REPORT

Darlene Perkins distributed her report for June and highlighted her home visits and appointments.  She noted they have had a lot of new members.  She has working with transportation, homecare, finding medical equipment and information on how to choose skilled care facilities issues  .She continues to meet with volunteers on a regular basis and homebound elders.  She noted she attended monthly meetings with the Outreach Coordinators of Cape Cod and met with the public nurse Kathy Ganey.  

Darlene said she also met with Claudia Borden, the outreach worker in Barnstable, at the Harwich Food Pantry and also met with the director and retired Human Resource Director to start the new program “Wisdom Works” to help seniors needing to rejoin the work force.  She also attended the Hoarding Task Force of Mashpee, the Healthcare Benefits forum update, and attended training managing conflict.

Motion:  Jack Dorsey moved to accept the Outreach Coordinator’s Report, seconded by Jack Jordan.  Vote unanimous.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR REPORT

No Report at this time.

ACTIVITY COORDINATOR REPORT

Lynne distributed the Volunteer Coordinator’s Report highlighting the Mashpee Senior Center Falcon Golf Group, music programs in conjunction with the KC Coombs School, the Poetry Program and the Floral Arranging Workshops.  Lynne Waterman also noted the Cape Cod Five’s Common Sense Banking was very informative and the AARP Driver Safety Program was well attended.  The Genesis Luncheon was also very well attended.  

Lynne also mentioned that Christine Foisy has prepared a program survey form.  She said that the feedback has been very good. and distributed a list of the Social and Wellness Activities.

Motion:  Jack Dorsey moved to accept the Activity Coordinator Report, seconded by Jack Jordan.  Vote Unanimous.

OLD BUSINESS

None

NEW BUSINESS

Jack Dorsey suggested sending Arthur Eisenberg a letter because he is moving to Canton.  Lynne noted a letter was sent thanking him for his service to the Senior Center.  


Motion:  Jeanne Noussee moved to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Jack Jordan.  Vote was unanimous.  Meeting adjourned 9:20 p.m.
