Energy Committee Minutes 2005/03/21
LYME ENERGY COMMITTEE
MINUTES
March 21, 2005

Present: Tina Cullenberg, Tom Hunton, Denis Kelemen, Claudia Kern, Carola Lea, John Stadler

Minutes of the February meeting were approved.

1.  Tom visited the Fire Station and made observations of energy status including:
        -four good bay doors
        -roof is poorly insulated
-lighting is dim
-heating with electricity and gas space heaters
-forced hot water in parts of the building
        -toilet- freezes on occasion
-fan seems to be on most of the time vs. cycling
-building was built in 1973; Tim Estes could estimate what changes could be made
Analysis of heating bills and the furnace would help determine if making changes would be cost effective considering it has 10-15 years life span left.  Therefore Tom will meet with Dina Cutting to look at heating bills and contact Tim Estes; then he will  report back to LEC.

2.  Town Garage-
- According to Matt the temperature is kept at 65 degrees and lights seem to be on at all hours
        - circulating pump is oversized for the job
-Tom to get copy of electric bill from Dina
        -Claudia to check with Matt

3.  Wind Energy-  Denis
Lee is concerned about maintaining the attention of 6th graders
Denis- teaching Wind Energy in the curriculum would be good to do before the end of the school year
Skip Pendleton plan to devote one class of 45 minutes to Wind Energy.  He has some hands on connection to information for good retention  (speed, temperature, direction).  In the Sate of Vermont the Senate has given three schools access to a wind turbine which has yet to be used for educational purposes.
John will do a Google search of wind energy in the elementary school curriculum and check with AWEA (American Wind Energy Association)

4.  Claudia to submit Green Tips for Saving Energy to the next Church Newsletter.
These are “borrowed” from the Consumers Guide to Effective Environmental Choices.

Meeting closed 8:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Tina Cullenberg
