Lenox Historical Commission
April 9, 2007, 7:00 p.m.
Lenox Academy, 2nd Floor
Minutes
Commissioners present: George Jordan, Lavinia Meeks, Suzanne Pelton, Andrea Winter
Volunteer: Julie Martino
The meeting was called to order at 7:01. The minutes of the March 12 meeting were approved as presented. Andrea Winter was unanimously elected Chair of the Commission.
OLD BUSINESS
Demolition Delay Bylaw and Preservation Planning– Suzanne and Andrea presented the DDB to Select Board on March 28. Lavinia and Julie attended as well. BOS concerns: 12 months is too long, 50 years of age too inclusive and houses/buildings worthy of preservation should be listed. Andrea will compile info on other MA towns’ delay time period, George and Andrea will get building dates on newer houses probably worth preserving (71 Cliffwood, 101 Yokun respectively) and consider a cut-off of 75 years. The LHC unanimously favors preparation of a preservation plan (surveys of all historical assets.) The Massachusetts Historical Commission recommends a qualified consultant be hired to prepare this (state funding--matched by CPA funds—is available.) Date of next presentation to Select Board to be
determined.
Westinghouse Streetlights Restoration – Greg Federspiel, Town Manager, indicated he would get back to Suzanne with the date the Select Board will make a decision on streetlight model to be installed in the village when funds are raised/available.
NEW BUSINESS
Office Files - Commissioners will keep working at discovery and organization.
16 New Lenox Road – On May 16, the ZBA will hear a petition to demolish this house, which looks to be from the early 1900’s. George will get date house was built from town records. We will try to find more information and discuss at next meeting if it can be determined that this house should have been protected.
Historic District Commission – Andrea will get HDC Guidelines from Town Hall for LHC office.
Joan, Lavinia and Julie are interested in preparing a visitor’s brochure of Lenox.
Meeting adjourned at 8:01. The next two meetings are June 11 and July 9 at 7 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Suzanne W. Pelton
Secretary
