Board of Health Minutes 08/06/2003
Town of Lenox
Board of Health

Minutes of Meeting - August 6, 2003

Members Present:        Andrew J. Breslin, Chair, Marie V. Feder, Joseph A. Kellogg

Chair A. Breslin called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. in the Lenox Town Hall.
Minutes of the June 4, 2003 meeting were reviewed and signed by all members.

It was noted that the regularly scheduled meeting for July 2, 2003 had been canceled due to schedule conflicts and lack of an agenda.

There was a brief discussion about the recent going away party held at Tri-Town Health for Sharon Terry, Tobacco Control Program Coordinator.  M. Feder commented about the irony of the State finally providing us with $40,000 in Tobacco Control Grant funds after taking it away, causing S. Terry to leave for another job.
Board members expressed their disappointment about the timing of the grant coming in too late to retain Ms. Terry.

Board members discussed the increasing reports of birds being killed by West Nile Virus, the latest being found in Lee.  With no funding for spraying for mosquitos, it was agreed that additional effort should be made to advise the public of precautions they can take to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitos, such as the use of repellant, removing standing water sources, and wearing appropriate clothing while outside during dawn and dusk.

The mail was read and included a thank you letter from Sharon Terry, the Berkshire VNA Quarterly Report, notice of a fee increase from the State for vital records services, a letter from Tri-Town Health advising of a failed septic system at 880 East Street, and a notice from Peter Kolodziej, notifying the Board that he has hired Patricia Hanley to fill the part time secretarial slot, formerly filled by Marlene MacFarlene.

There was a short discussion about a Tri-Town Health proposal for a grant to perform food service training.  Apparently, it was too late to file the application for 2003 funding, but a proposal will be prepared in time for 2004 funding.

A. Breslin informed the Board of changes he had become aware of at the Lenox Dale Transfer Station.  The site has recently been purchased from Waste Management by another firm.  As a result of this transaction, residents are no longer allowed to bring their recyclables, free of charge to the station, but will be charged, based on weight,

with a minimum $5.00 fee.  Board members expressed concern about whether such changes were permitted.  It was agreed that the topic should be brought up at the next Tri-Town Health meeting, scheduled for August 26th at 7 p.m.

M. Feder reported as a follow up to a complaint which had been received in June relative to the bushes outside Mole and Mole’s office on Main Street harboring mice.  She noted that upon investigation, it was discovered the bushes had been removed and replaced with new, attractive shrubbery.  There were no mice in evidence.

There being no further business before the Board, the meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
