7:30 p.m. RDA-Laurel Lake Preservation Association, removal of Eurasian Water Milfoil from lake.
Presenting the RDA was Ray Grogan, a member of the Laurel Lake Preservation Association. Mr. Grogan gave a detailed history of a feasibility study that was done four years ago by Lee and Lenox and efforts to eradicate invasive plants. The three ways considered for eradication-chemicals, draw down of the lake and hand pulling. The association opposed the use of chemicals because of the expense. Some in the Preservation Association were not supportive of the use of chemicals either. Schweitzer Mauduit, International, a paper company in Lee who has rights to the top 12 feet of the lake would not support a draw down because they feared the water would not come back to the level. The new process of hand pulling the weeds requires scuba divers and volunteers and is effective in shallow areas
of the lake. Mercedes Gallager of the Conservation Commission in Becket, MA would train the volunteers. The weed, safe on land, would be disposed of at the Lenox DPW compost site. A positive response has been received from the DEP.
RFC made a motion to grant a Negative 2 Determination with conditions and JS seconded the motion. The Commission approved 7-0.
