BOSTON POST CANE (photo by Town Administrator Julie Glover)
On Monday, February 13th,  Chairman of the Select Board, John R. LaCourse presented the Boston Post Cane to Eleanor Plumer (born November 4th, 1912) at her home in Lee.  For the story in Foster’s Daily Democrat click here > Boston Post Cane Story

The Boston Post Cane tradition began in 1909, when editor of the Boston Post newspaper, Edward A. Grozier, devised an elaborate advertising campaign to increase circulation of the newspaper. Grozier then distributed the canes to various town and city governments around the New England states. The intent was to strike up publicity in the paper as the canes were presented to the oldest residents in the various towns. With so many towns, the newspaper had a human interest story just about every day. Nothing sold papers more than people and family members seeing their name and picture in the newspaper.

Lee's history goes back to 1911 to the first holder, Moses V. Davis. We had a total of 11 recipients through 2006 when the Post Cane was presented to Gwen Sawtelle, who recently passed at the age of 99.

LEE FARMER'S MARKET
Spring is not as far away as it seems and the folks at the Lee Farmer's Market are making plans for another successful year at the market. The Market will continue to be held at the Highway Department on Mast Rd (old fire station) in Lee. The hours are 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Thursdays. We're planning on a good variety of fresh local products, ranging from produce and fruits, to meats and wool. If you've been to the market in the past you'll remember the fine products and the sense of community. If you haven't yet experienced the market give it a try this year. Begin looking for the signs around Memorial Day.

The vendors want to thank all of you for the strong support you given us over the last few years. We will continue to do our best in providing the best quality products for you.  If you would like to see products at the market that we don't presently have, let me know and we'll see what we can do. This year we are planning on presenting some entertainment and educational demonstrations during the markets. Also, we hope to post a list of products for sale at the market each week on the Town's website.

If you are interested in participating as a vendor in the Market give me a call.

RECYCLING SURVEYS
Four hundred surveys were mailed Monday, February 6th to  randomly chosen households in Lee.  A study is being conducted by UNH Graduate student Christopher Wright and Professor John. M. Halstead to learn about household preferences for trash and recycling.  The goal of the study is to identify the trash and recycling services preferred by households. While many New Hampshire towns have established community recycling programs, municipal solid waste managers are interested in opportunities to increase recycling rates and reduce the quantity of household solid waste that is disposed at landfills or incinerators. For more information about the study contact: Christopher Wright at (603) 617-9130 or email at cen33@unh.edu.

Are You Talking to Me?
The Language of Dogs and Cats   Wednesday, February 22  7:00 p.m.
Have you ever wondered what your pet was trying to say to you? Dog and cats are talking to us all the time, but unfortunately their message often is lost in translation. Miscommunication leads to poor training, behavior problems like aggressive behavior, and fatal blows to the human-animal bond. This review of canine and feline communication will discuss how dogs and cats use scent, vocalization, and body language to communicate.
