Alien Invaders!
Join the fight to control invasive plants that are threatening our native plant and wildlife species.  Come learn how to identify invasives and then how to eradicate them.  The Newmarket Conservation Commission has extended an invitation to all interested Lee residents to hear Doug Cygan, Invasive Species Coordinator with the NH Dept. of Agriculture, Wednesday, April 27, at 7:00 PM at the Newmarket Town Hall.

Just what is an invasive plant, anyway?  In short, it is a non-native plant that is particularly aggressive in out-competing native species.  Their success often is the result of having no natural predators or diseases here.  Also, their reproduction rates often are exceptionally high.

Why, you might ask, should we care?  Because of their aggressive nature, invasives crowd out native plants on which our native wildlife and migratory birds depend for food and/or for habitat.  And studies have shown that many invasives lack the nutrient value that our wildlife needs.

What can we do about it?  Learn how to identify and then how to control them on your property.  We can make a difference.

Oyster River Cooperative School Board
The Chair and the Vice-Chair of the Oyster River Cooperative School Board would like to reassure the community that active steps are being taken to ensure that a principal will be in place for the 2011-2012 school year.  Options are being discussed by the superintendent and his staff, as well as stakeholders in the high school and broader community.  The Board and the administration are fully cognizant of State laws and our NEAS&C accreditation regarding applicable personnel requirements.  Our paramount concern at this stage is to do what is best for the students of the district.  The School Board is committed to moving forward decisively and with all due speed.

Film Screening:  The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe
Wednesday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Public Safety Complex
Within the moldering chambers of a desolate house, a solitary manservant
tends to his invalid master. Tormented by constant silence and the banality of his
duties, the Servant's fears gradually turn to violent obsession. With tangibly
detailed period design and hauntingly lifelike puppetry, director/designer Robert
Eggers unearths the decaying dream world of Poe.  Eggers, a Lee native, directed this short film adaptation of Poe’s classic at the Burley-Demeritt Homestead in Lee.  More than half the cast and crew, including producers Michael Neal and Maura Anderson, have ties to the Greater Seacoast area.  More information about this film can be found at:  www.telltaleheartfilm.com.

Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream
by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Monday, May 9 at 7:00 pm
Doris Kearns Goodwin's classic life of Lyndon Johnson, who presided over the Great Society, the Vietnam War, and other defining moments of the tumultuous 1960s, is a monument in political biography. From the moment the author, then a young woman from Harvard, first encountered President Johnson at a White House dance in the spring of 1967, she became fascinated by the man—his character, his enormous energy and drive, and his manner of wielding these gifts in an endless pursuit of power. As a member of his White House staff, she soon became his personal confidante, and in the years before his death he revealed himself to her as he did to no other. Widely praised and enormously popular, Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream is a work of biography like few others. With uncanny insight and a richly engrossing style, the author renders LBJ in all his vibrant, conflicted humanity. –from the publisher.
