September 12, 2015 - Work Session Minutes
Jackson Conservation Commission
Work Session Minutes- September 12, 2015  9:30am
Unofficial until Approved

Present were commission members: Tom Seidel, Margaret Graciano, Larry Siebert, Pam Smillie, Brian Byrne, and Mike Dufilho. Jackson resident Bill Terry and selectman Bob Thompson also attended. Commission member Dave Matesky was absent.

The commission started by identifing future work under the current management plan. These  include: “No Parking” signs on Valley Cross Rd., replenishing wood chips on the designated trails, further brushing in to keep people from walking on unwanted “cat track” paths and planting more native species to accelerate undergrowth regeneration.

Bob Thompson arrived soon after and we discusssed the need for increased communication between the conservation commission and the town selectman. In order to do so effectively, he suggested we formally request a liaison from the board of selectman at our next meeting. We reviewed the work we have done so far with Bob and brainstormed some ideas for future action including reduced parking, a split rail fence, and the placement of select boulders to prevent parking in high erosion zones. Bob encouraged the commission to develop a plan and approach the selectman with formal proposals of action. We discussed the possibility of hiring Greg Howard again to revise our Falls management plan. We were really grateful that Bob took the time to come and speak with us.

After Bob left, we fixed the twine designating re-vegetation zones and put up six welcome signs at the  main access points. These signs welcome visitors to the falls, encourage them to stay on the designated trails, and informs that the area has a carry in/carry out policy. Bill Terry allowed the commission to use brush from his driveway to block off undesirable walkways.

The work session ended at 12:00pm.

Respectfully submitted,
Margaret Graciano
