Conservation Commission Work Session 11/18/2012
Conservation Commission Work Session Minutes November 18, 2012

Present were members; Brian Byrne, Dave Matesky, Mike Dufihlo, Pam Smillie, Jess Wilson, and Larry Siebert. Hank Dresch was unable to attend.

Volunteers from the community were Linda Comeau, Al Aldrich, Bruce Mclane, Chris Fithian, Holly Lewis, and Mark Leary.

We met at the Town offices at 9:30 AM, and proceeded to walk the trail. What would have been a 3 hour trail cutting operation turned out to be about an hours worth of work due to the wonderful turnout from the community. From the library parking lot to the height of Town property, the new trail will be a dog friendly 1 mile loop with views of Mt. Washington, and Carter Notch.

We hope to get signage along the trail; pointing out the historic Ice Pond Dam built in the late 1800’s to produce ice for the Gray’s Inn refrigeration needs. A second cement dam built later to fill the hotels swimming pool, and the apple orchard will be identified as well as a large unknown foundation high up on the property.

Columnist Peter Minich will be mentioning the new trail in his upcoming weekly article in the Mountain Ear, and with the help of Larry Garland and Thom Perkins we will be getting the trail mapped out for Jackson Ski Touring and eventually the Chamber of Commerce map and brochure for tourists, “ Walks and Hikes around Jackson “.
