Holland Trails Committee Minutes
Date: June 25, 2014
Present: Richard & Chris Haller, and Fred Beaulieu. Stacy Ryan participated remotely from Pennsylvania.
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM by Dick Haller. The minutes were approved
as read.
Old Business:
Because the appropriation at last year’s Town Meeting was for “trail construction,” funds
can not be spent on stationary supplies, but work gloves, kneepads, etc. might be possible.
The signs have been installed by the Highway Department. It was decided to keep two
as spares. Brian says he has not forgotten the grading he said he would do.
Bob Clark made inquiries about portable toilets after seeing one on a trail in Sturbridge.
A-1 Septic will rent one for 28 days for $110 (cleaned weekly) while the charge for a
weekend is $119. It appears that the Recreation Committee has installed one at Hitchcock
Field. Dick will ask the Chairman about this. He will also investigate liability for
vandalism.
At the workday on June 7th, 2/3s of the surfacing was completed. There were 11 volunteers
(including 2 newcomers) from Holland and about an equal number from Brimfield.
There was plenty of equipment. No material is left. A joint grant with Brimfield is a possibility.
Rain threatened the morning of the trail ride on June 14th, but there were eight participants,
four of them new to the trail. The mechanic from Bicycle Concepts failed to arrive,
and the Committee has received an apology from Pat McGarrah.
There were about 30 participants in the Water Trail paddle in the afternoon. Fred and
Dick represented Holland. It may be possible to partner with Last Green Valley on future
events.
New Business:
Dick has received a note from Amy Bishop explaining that the Recreation Committee is
interested in more adult activities. There is a vacancy on the Committee which could be
filled by a Trails Committee member. Chris and Stacy are interested in attending the
next meeting.
