HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on August 3, 2011

        
The meeting was opened at 1:18 p.m. by Chairman Sue Sanders

PRESENT:  COA members: Diane Balderelli, Earl Johnson, Brad Noble, Jack Reed and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Manager Don Sanders, Outreach Worker Deb Tierney and Linda Artruc.

ABSENT:   Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon and Don Sanders.
        
The meeting was begun with a motion by Diane to accept Bruce Mahan as a member of the COA.  The vote was unanimous.
        
MINUTES:  Motion by Diane to accept the July 6, 2011, minutes was made.  The minutes are corrected to reflect the correct time for Movie Night as 6:30 p.m. instead of 7:00 p.m.

REPORTS

OUTREACH WORKER – Deb submitted a written report which was distributed.  Deb reported on the first two of our physician speakers, the second of whom addressed us today.  The third speaker will be here on August 24th.  Trainer Denise Pontbriand will return one more time to answer questions and check on the people’s progress.  The Senior Center was made available as a cooling center for residents during the July heat wave.  Enhanced 911 was used to check on seniors and the Reverse 911 system was used to notify residents of the Senior Center’s availability as a cooling center.  Two residents expressed their gratitude for the calls.  Movie night increased in attendance from 3 to 9 with some attendees bringing goodies to share in addition to the popcorn.  Sue McNulty of Radius HealthCare in Southbridge and Worcester visited today.  Radius will sponsor a cookout on Thursday, September 15th.  Deb will be away from August 13th thru the 17th.  She will have the newsletter ready by the 25th or 26th.  

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.  In July, 1135 contacts were made and 86 seniors were served.  298 attended the Center, 132 attended congregate meals.  The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (208), COA meeting (11), senior tax work off (24), cards & games (88), exercise (85), stained glass (66), movie (12), entertainment/programs (24), speakers (26), Veteran’s agent (7), computer (12), crafts (14), meetings (18), pizza lunch (20), phone calls (90).

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM:  Margaret Crock - As July 31, 2011, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $776.00, Town Clerk $184.00 and Holland Elementary School $24.00.  Year-to-date total is $984.00.  FY 2011 Senior Tax Abatement program completed.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday and Wednesday – reservations, please.  Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m.; Tuesday gentle Chair Yoga from 10:00 to 11:00 with Eva.  Small fee per class.  Stained glass classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $20/month.  Call Tom Baltazar 413 245-3163 to register; craft class 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. with Linda Artruc, Activities Coordinator. Wednesday 10:00  to 11:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program with Eva Pittsinger; COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Tai Chi from 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. with David Masera, small fee per class; craft classes with Linda Artruc and guest artisans 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday Computer classes 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. with Linda, and Cribbage from 12:15-3:00 p.m.  Weekdays:  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work.  We have exercise equipment available Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  No fee.  Wednesday, August 3rd at 11:00 a.m. Dr. James Figueroa*, Thursday, August 4th at 6:30 p.m. movie (TBA) in the Community Room.  Monday, August 8th at noon, entertainment by Gil Fraser; Wednesday, August 10rd at 5:00 p.m. Friends of Holland Seniors meeting; Wednesday, August 24th 12:30 p.m., Dr. Barbara Hitchcock* from Wing VNA and Hospice; mid-August (date TBA) Roger Davis will conduct computer classes; Sept. 12th, noon, Gene and Mary Campbell presentation, November 6th possible date for Craft Fair pending approval.  Note: At times, Thursday nights (on movie nights) could be a make-up time for cancelled Stained Glass classes.  *Funded through GSSSI.

FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer - July Treasurer’s report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $630.00 and Gifts $150.00.  Telephone: $5.51, supplies $20.00, trash pickup $54.46, National Grid $105.32, Eva Pittsinger $240.00, yard care $115.50, security 75.00, Dr. James Figueroa $100.00, salaries $1,605.80.   

MANAGER:  Don Sanders – Don provided a written report stating that everything in the kitchen appears to be in good shape; there are no apparent problems.  The grounds are fine.  There are two events upcoming, one on August 20th and one on September 17th.

Motion by Diane to accept the above reports was unanimously approved.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:   

NEW BUSINESS:  We will begin advertising for the position of Senior Center Director as Margaret is planning to retire sometime in the fall.  The proposal to host a barbeque sponsored by Radius HealthCare was discussed.  Motion by Earl to go ahead with plans for the BBQ pending Don’s approval.  Requests to use the Senior Center on August 20th and November 6th were presented and reviewed.  The August 20th request, having been approved by Don, was approved by the COA.  Much discussion took place about the November 6th Craft Fair.  Don was not at the meeting to have any input.  It was decided to table approval of this event until the next meeting so Don can be here.

Motion to adjourn made by Diane at 2:06 p.m. was unanimously carried.
