HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on July 7, 2011

        
The meeting was opened at 10:25 a.m. by Chairman Sue Sanders

PRESENT:  COA members: Diane Balderelli, Earl Johnson, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Manager Don Sanders, and Linda Artruc.

ABSENT:   Jack Reed, and Outreach Worker Deb Tierney.
        
MINUTES:  Motion by Diane to accept the June 1, 2011, minutes was approved.

Bruce Mahon, COA applicant for the position of alternate, was introduced to those in attendance.

REPORTS

OUTREACH WORKER – Deb submitted a written report which was distributed.  Deb reported she had set up Linda for a Serve Safe class.  However, Linda discovered that there was no reimbursement available at this time from Citizens for Citizens.  She therefore cancelled her attendance at the class.  Discussion took place about the COA or the Friends funding this class.  Motion by Diane to use the Gift Account to pay for Linda and Don for Serve Safe certification.  Motion was amended to fund just Lind from the Gift Account for Serve Safe certification.  Motion was unanimously carried. · The first movie night was held, but only three attended.  Presentations by medical professionals will be held in July and August under the Health and Wellness Program.  

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.  In May, 1127 contacts were made and 90 seniors were served.  425 attended the Center, 132 attended congregate meals.  The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (100), COA meeting (8), senior tax work off (12), AVADA (3), cards & games (62), exercise (101), stained glass (52), entertainment (22), speakers (26), Veteran’s agent and preparation and retired of American flags (30), movie (3), computer (15), crafts and gardening (20), meetings (8), activities (9), phone calls (96).

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock - As June 30, 2011, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $4,980.00, the Assessor’s office $276.00, tax collector $554.00, Town Clerk $722.00, and Holland Elementary School $1,772.00.  Year-end total is $8,304.00.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday and Wednesday – reservations, please.  Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m.; Tuesday gentle Chair Yoga from 10:00 to 11:00 with Eva.  Small fee per class.  Stained glass classes from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Fee: $20/month.  Call Tom Baltazar 413 245-3163 to register; craft class 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. with Linda Artruc, Activities Coordinator. Wednesday 10:00  to 11:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program with Eva Pittsinger; COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Tai Chi from 3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. with David Masera, small fee per class; craft classes with Linda Artruc and guest artisans 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday Computer classes 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. with Linda, and Cribbage from 12:15-3:00 p.m.  Weekdays:  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work.  We have exercise equipment available Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  No fee.  Wednesday, July 13th at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Sarah Call from Brimfield Family Health, Thursday, July 21st at 7:00 p.m. movie (TBA) in the Community Room.  Monday, July 18th 12:45 p.m., Chris Haller will help us make cleaning products with herbs.  July 29th – 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. – American Red Cross blood drive.  Wednesday, August 3rd 10:15 a.m. monthly COA meeting; Thursday, August 4th 7:00 p.m., movie (TBA) in the Community Room.  Wednesday, August 24th 12:30 p.m., Dr. Barbara Hitchcock from Wing VNA and Hospice.  There is a problem with Dr. Figueroa speaking on August 3rd at 11:00 a.m. as it conflicts with our COA meeting.  Motion by Earl to change our meeting to August 10th.  Discussion took place and the motion was amended to ask Dr. Figueroa to come for lunch and speak afterward, or cancel the event.  Motion was seconded and unanimously carried.

FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer - June report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $630.00.  Telephone: $85.33, water testing $24.00, Lois Dupre $174.15, kitchen supplies $221.51, Tai Chi instructor $240.00, stamps $175.00, office supplies and building repairs $214.20, trans pickup $54.46, National Grid $94.63, printing/mailing newsletter $133.51, Osterman Propane $257.83, mileage $54.00, Eva Pittsinger $270.00, yard care and fertilizer $199.50, Denise Pontbriand (3 sessions) $480.00, umbrellas $229.76, bench $44.98, coffee and exercise equipment $49.95, Tea Party $102.35, salaries $3,508.20.   Denise Pontbriand (5 sessions) $150.00.  Earl said we need to ask the Selectmen to approve the tax work-off program as it is, with a copy to the Town Accountant.  Outreach Work Deb Tierney has requested vacation pay for this week.  Discussion took place.  Motion by Diane to pay Deb for her vacation time From July 4th to July 7th 2011 was seconded and unanimously carried.

MANAGER:  Don Sanders – Don had to leave the meeting unexpectedly and was unable to give a report.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:   Well situation.  We do not have DEP approval yet.  Selectman Jim Wettlaufer is handling this.

NEW BUSINESS:  Requests to use the Senior Center on July 17th and September 17th were presented and reviewed.  Motion by Diane to approve these two requests was unanimous.

CORRESPONDENCE:   None.

Motion to adjourn made by Diane at 11:20 a.m. was unanimously carried.
