HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING
Minutes of meeting held on August 4, 2010


Meeting opened at 10:19 a.m. by Chairman Bruce Plumley

PRESENT:  COA members: Tom Baltazar, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, Brad Noble, Bruce Plumley, Jack Reed, and Susan Sanders.  Others: Senior Center Director Margaret Crock, Manager Don Sanders and COA Alternate Earl Johnson.

ABSENT:  Linda Artruc and Deb Tierney
MINUTES:  Report by Ken on the Spaghetti Dinner was not included in the July 7, 2010, minutes.  This report will be included in this month’s minutes.  Motion by Jack, seconded by Brad to accept the July 7, 2010, minutes was approved.

REPORTS:  

OUTREACH WORKER – Debbie Tierney – Deb is on vacation, but submitted her report.  Tai Chi and Yoga programs have begun as requested in the Title III grant.  We use the Mah Jongg set, and genealogy software has been introduced on the computer.  The stained glass program is highly successful; both morning and night classes are full.

SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In June, 1,187 contacts were made and 190 seniors were served.  325 attended the Center, 102 attended congregate meals.  The balance Includes: Intergenerational activities (343), COA meeting (9), cards & games (76), exercise (84), senior tax work off program (8), Veteran’s agent (10), stained glass (30), meetings and activities (32), crafts (12), garden club and gardening (12), computer (12), speaker (34), genealogy (3), meetings and activities (10), phone calls (90).  For safety reasons, we are looking for someone to be available in the exercise room periodically.  MCOA sent information about an umbrella license for showing videos or playing music.  This item was tabled since it was not on the agenda.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock
As of July 31, 2010, the Senior Center has used the program in the amount of $1,064.00, and the Assessor’s office $44.00.  Total YTD is $1,108.00.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:  Regular programs:  Lunch is served every Monday as well as on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month – reservations, please.  Monday Veterans Services Agent at noon – reservations needed; Monday Mah Jongg at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.; Tuesday Stained glass classes at 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m., “Gentle Yoga” from 11:00 to noon, craft class at 1:30 p.m., and Garden Club 2nd Tuesday 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.; Wednesday 10:00 a.m. Arthritis Foundation exercise program at 10:00 a.m. with Eva Pittsinger, and COA meeting on the 1st Wednesday at 10:15; Thursday 12:30-3:00 p.m. cribbage, computer classes at 10:00 a.m. with Linda Artruc, and craft classes with Linda from 1:30 to 2:30.  Card games, scrabble and puzzles available daily.  We have some activities after 3:00 p.m. to accommodate those who work.  If interested in Line Dancing, you can sample it at Brimfield Senior Center on August 17th, midday.  August 9th 12:45 p.m.: Grand Trunk Railroad presentation with author Larry Lowenthal and Howie Fife.  Christian Petersen will discuss hiking trails to Grand Trunk locales here in Holland.  August 16th 12:45 p.m.: “Lost Village of East Brimfield” presented by Larry Lowenthal and Howie Fife.  NOTE: Lost Village of East Brimfield may be presented first, on August 9th.

FINANCIAL:  Brad Noble, Treasurer  
July report includes:  Receipts: GSSSI $630.00, stained glass gifts of $90.00, and gifts totaling $150.00.  Expenditures: Telephone $68.63, exercise classes $60.00, Yoga classes $160.00, security $75.00, trash pickup program $52.27, National Grid $104.53, Senior Center equipment $279.98, lawn care $136.50, and salaries $1,416.80.  Approved at the Town Meeting for FY 2011are: COA expenses $4,744.00, Director’s salary $4,840.00, Senior Center expenses and maintenance $8,717.00, and Facility Manager’s wages $5,126.00.

MANAGER: Don Sanders – It was noticed during inspection that the convection oven is not tied in to the safety system in the kitchen.  A micro switch was installed, but it needs an electrician for hook-up.  Don will check on an electrician.  Water diversion needs to be installed at rear of building where roof water gets into basement window well.  We need about ten new tables in the dining room.  Current tables pose a danger of collapsing, as one has.  When estimate obtained, it could be presented to GSSSI.  Sue will also get estimate for cornices for windows.  Ken states the need to prepare our lawn for winter during September, with fertilizer, lime and perhaps grub control.  He requests $200.00 for fertilizer.  Motion by Brad, seconded by Earl, to approve $200.00 expenditure for fertilizer was approved.  Ken reports the spaghetti dinner was a great success with approximately $850.00 profit.  About 200 people were served.  Thanks are extended to all the volunteers who helped.

Motion by Brad to accept all of the above verbal and printed reports was made and approved by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS:  None.

NEW BUSINESS:   The sofa in the dining room is not being used and is no longer needed.  Tom Baltazar’s daughter is interested.  Bruce proposed we let her have it and everyone agreed.

Motion made by Jack to adjourn the meeting at 11:12 a.m.
