HOLLAND COUNCIL ON AGING

Minutes of meeting held On July 3, 2007

Meeting opened at 10:15 a.m.

PRESENT: COA members: Frank Antonovitch, Lowell Nixon, Olive Nixon, John Reed, Brad Noble, and Harold Hewinson. Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker: Deb Tierney, Alternate member: Susan Sanders. Also present: Paul Gillis.

ABSENT:     Sara Meier who is on vacation.

Minutes of June 6, 2007, accepted.
REPORTS:
OUTREACH WORKER Deb Tierney.
No written report submitted. Deb spoke on her report from the two seminars she attended and hoped that all COA members and others will base future decisions and actions based on what she learned at these meetings.    
SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In June, 787 contacts made, 111 seniors served, 356 attended senior center, 122 attended congregate meals and the balance includes cards & games (103), exercise (26), senior tax work off program (10), flag retirement (25), Mike’s pizza lunch at the senior center (30), other activities make up the difference.   
FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer  
 As the month of June is the end of FY07, a preliminary report was submitted. Expenditures of June were: telephone $58.95, M Crock salary $540.62, Deb Tierney wages $691.58, Electric $146.95 plus (est. $175.57), Printing news letter $86.30, Stan Kaitbenski for sand fill $1,000, Foundation treatment $165.00, Brad Noble mileage $177.30, Postage for newsletter $98.90, Hydro-seeding $1,950.00, Computer items, router and printer $1,717.76, Furniture and supplies for office $1,037.26, Electrical, maintenance and kitchen services $352.00, Lois Dupre mileage $486.00, Stamps and supplies for senior center $67.22, and Trash pick up $25.57. We received one month (April) GSSSI outreach grant of $583.33. A revised estimate on 7/5/07 indicates amounts budgeted but not spent are payroll account $58.84, COA expense account $162.38 and Building account $763.78.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Margaret Crock, Deb Tierney & Olive Nixon
Corinne Lavallee is still working on “no-sew blankets” for service men. Thank you Corinne and your volunteers for this wonderful project.  ?An exercise class is held every Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. ?Corinne is preparing a simple meal on Thursday’s from 11:30 am to 12:45 p.m. ?Cribbage is held each Thursday at 1:00 p.m. ?Mah Jongg is held each Monday at 1:00 p.m. ?On August 6th Carol Pottie will speak on Personal care monitoring and on August 15th our annual picnic will be held. ?In late Aug. or in Sept. there will be tickets available for the theater in Sturbridge sponsored by the Holland Cultural Council.

SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
Total charges for FY07 Senior Center $2,299.08, Tax Collector $361.80, Elementary School $2,102.50, Assessors $382.50 and Town Clerk $348.75. Total $5,494.63.

BUILDING MAINTENANCE:  Paul Gillis     
No written report submitted.

FRIENDS OF HOLLAND SENIORS:  No report                               
All of the above reports were accepted by the Council on Aging.

OLD BUSINESS
Discussion on charging for use of the Senior Center resulted in the following action.  Brad will find out what other COA’s charge and how the money is handled. As of 7/3/07 there have been no responses to his request. Brad will follow up with Springfield. All membership and other renewals were approved by the Selectmen.
NEW BUSINESS
Motions approved to have Paul Gillis purchase cleaning supplies in an amount not to exceed $471.00 and to have Don Sanders contact a vendor to repair broken window in main door in the amount of $240.00. ?Corinne Lavallee submitted a logo to be used by the COA and others connected with the Holland Senior Center.  Motion approved to use the logo submitted with a slight modification. We wish to thank Corinne for developing this logo on her computer. We also wish to thank Mr. Lavallee for his contribution of Pizza. ?Acknowledgement of Corinne’s design of the logo should be noted in the next newsletter.
COMPUTER UPDATE
Mr. Peret has two of the computers completed and has one with our new printer hooked up. It was approved by the COA to limit who could use the printer to those that have been trained on it. We are very fortunate to have Mr. Romie Goulart donating his professional services in hooking up our computers to the Cox internet. He also installed a router which services 6 of the 7 ports. The port that is not hooked up yet is the one in the reading room. Basic instructions for e mails will be available at the Senior Center.
