Minutes of meeting held On May 2, 2007
Meeting opened at 10:15 a.m.
PRESENT: COA members: Frank Antonovitch, Olive Nixon, John Reed, Brad Noble, and Harold Hewinson. Others: Senior Center Director: Margaret Crock, Outreach Worker: Deb Tierney, Alternate member: Susan Sanders. Also present: Paul Gillis.
ABSENT: Lowell Nixon and Sara Meier

REPORTS:
OUTREACH WORKER Deb Tierney.
Deborah Hollingsworth from GSSSI spoke on April 23rd to enumerate the services available to seniors from GSSSI and provided new Elder guide booklets and brochures. On May7th, Jerry Supernant from Sturbridge will tell us tales from his own adventures. On June 6th at 4:30, Judy Yaffe will speak on the V.A. Aid and Attendance pension. On June 20th we will have a mini Health Fair at the Senior Center from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. It would include various screenings and tests, i.e. vision, hearing, bone density and pre-stroke. I will be moving into the Senior Center by July 1, 2007 and will share the existing office with Margaret. I will need a phone, internet, furniture and supplies. The COA agreed that Debbie would work with Margaret on the program committee. Motion made, seconded and
approved to have Debbie attend two conferences on 5/16 & 5/23 with a total cost of $45.00 plus mileage.
SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR: Margaret Crock.
In April , 690 contacts made, 81 seniors served, 274 attended senior center, 101 attended congregate meals and the balance includes cards & games (126), exercise (28), senior tax work off program (17), an estimated 100 at the Friends function and other activities. ?Received a donation of 4 umbrellas for deck tables from Corinne Lavallee. Thank you Corinne, they have already been put to good use.
FINANCIAL: Brad Noble, Treasurer
Expenditures in April were: telephone $57.15, M Crock salary $540.58, Deb Tierney wages $563.34, Electric 157.75, Supplies $70.81, Gas $-0-, Don Sanders services $198.00, GSSSI matching funds $61.00, security services $75.00, Stamps $89.70, Worc. Lock & key service $85,00, Lumber & paint $153,85 and Trash pick up $25.57. Received one month (February) GSSSI outreach grant of $583.33.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Margaret Crock & Olive Nixon
Need qualified home owners to sign up for the Tax work off program. On May 14th
the second graders will be presenting decorated cups to the seniors at 10:30 a.m... On May 7th Tantasqua will be holding their annual Senior Citizen Prom. The flower arrangement scheduled for May has been cancelled. ?Donna Burns has volunteered to organize our crafts room on 5/7/07 and help us to get something going along the crafts line. Need to have storage room completed and volunteers to move excess donations to lower level. Corrine Lavallee would like to have our seniors do “no-sew blankets” for service men. She is waiting for material. There is no cost related to this project. Mr. Peter Frei is trying to get together with someone to appraise antiques and present his program on vacuum products developed prior to electricity. Trying to arrange lunch at Mikes and
trying to get people signed up for Yoga class. Paul will look into a food share program, its costs and time requirements. Motion made, seconded and approved to have an open house after the cemetery activities for Memorial Day. Paul will be on hand to open the Center and Brad will pick up soda and coffee for this event.
SENIOR TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM: Margaret Crock and Harold Hewinson.
Year to date charges are senior center $2223.15, tax collector $78.75 and elementary school $2,012.50, Assessors $247.50.
BUILDING MAINTENANCE: Paul Gillis
A Schedule listing the projects that will be completed under article #9 approved at the Special Town meeting on 2/15/07 was presented to the Council. The estimated total cost of these projects is $5,952. Article #9 was approved at $6,325. Motion made, seconded and approved for the projects listed. Motion made, seconded and approved to reimburse Paul for two invoices totaling $170.50.
FRIENDS OF HOLLAND SENIORS: No report
All of the above reports were accepted by the Council on Aging.
OLD BUSINESS
It is understood that the “Spring Fling” that was to be put on by the Friends of Holland Seniors has been cancelled. Paul is going to get an estimate on what it will cost to install a light on the telephone poll that will illuminate the Flag so that it can be flown 24 hours a day. The installation by Cox for internet service has not been completed. The line stops at the telephone pole. Brad to have Elaine, the town executive secretary, follow up when she returns from vacation. The Selectmen have not made a decision yet on who will be their telephone supplier; Earl Johnson suggested we get the Verizon plan for $32.50 per month, unlimited calls. Brad will check with Linda Blodgett on this plan. Brad distributed a suggested plan on charging for the use of the Senior Center that will be discussed at the next
meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
Kitchen permit received from Board of Health.
CORRESPONDENCE – distributed on a weekly basis.
