DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
Programs:
Before/After School Programs
Denise went over the numbers for the Before & After School Programs. We currently care for 262 children each day.
Davis Hill – 50 AM and 52 PM (8 wait listed)
Mayo - 52 AM and 52 PM (7 wait listed AM, 8 wait listed PM)
Dawson – 22 AM and 34 PM
There has been a little movement in the programs and a couple of people were moved off the waiting lists and into the programs, but then additional people were added to the lists. Denise said the programs are strong and she complimented the staff. All of the staff will be up-to-date with their First Aid and CPR certifications as of this Thursday, October 10th. CPR certification is required to be done annually according to the Early Education and Care rules and regulations, and the First Aid certification from the American Heart Assn. needs to be done every two years.
All Before and After School staff will be required to undergo Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) checks and fingerprint based national and state criminal history database checks, in addition to the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Department of Children and Families (DCF) background record checks. Denise currently runs CORI and DCF background checks on all staff. The SORI and fingerprinting process is expected to be available in late October. Since our staff was hired prior to September 1, 2013, these new checks will need to be processed prior to our re-licensing the programs in September 2014. Summer staff at the pool will not need these checks, only the staff at our licensed school programs.
Adult Programs
All adult classes have begun and people are enthusiastic. Registration is as follows: Hatha Yoga 32 total participants for 2 classes, Yoga for Every “Body” 8 participants, Alphabet Soup 26 enrolled, Re-Shape 23 total participants for 2 classes, Men’s basketball has approximately 15/week and Women’s volleyball started September 26th with 12.
Miscellaneous:
The caulking of the lap pool was completed in late September. The original quote was $3,600, but an additional $1,900 was requested because of the unexpected huge gaps and the additional sealant that was needed.
The lap pool has been covered.
The installation of a new baseball field backstop and player protection areas at the Rice School field were expected to begin October 3rd. Miller Fence will be doing the work with the low bid of $6,342.00. This field is used by T-ball teams. Melissa asked what type of playing surface is on the field, because this past summer it was extremely dusty with dirt blowing around when dry. Denise said only the grass areas have irrigation.
Denise has been working with a couple of Boy Scouts for their Eagle Scout projects. One is interested in building a scorer’s table for the Bubar field, and the other would like to improve 3 Trout Brook trails with new signs (many of them have been damaged), trail markers, and removing fallen trees from pathways.
The Committee discussed Trout Brook and the hunting laws. Some members of the Committee did not realize that hunting was allowed at Trout Brook. Denise said it is posted. It was also mentioned that hunting is never permitted on Sundays.
The “winter festival” will be held on December 7th. Lisa will contact the First Congregational Church regarding using the room. Meeting time that day will be around 3:15 - 3:30 p.m.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m.
The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2013
@ 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Department office.
