DIRECTOR’S REPORT:

                       Programs:
Before/After School Programs
Denise went over the numbers for the Before & After School Programs. We currently have 238 children enrolled on a daily basis.
Davis Hill – 52 AM (maximum capacity with a waiting list) and 40 PM
     Mayo -  34 AM and 47 PM
    Dawson – 32 AM and 33 PM

Adult Programs
Denise went over the updated numbers for the current session of Adult Programs. Hatha Yoga on Tuesday and Thursday mornings has 27 participants. Zumba has 20 participants, Zumba with Sculpting has 15 enrolled, 3CPYo 18 enrolled, Yoga for Every “Body” 12 participants, and Flip it for Fat Loss 10 participants.  We will continue to have the Hatha Yoga morning classes at the Light Department community room.  There will be one more 6-week session of yoga before the summer break, and a yoga workshop in June.  Adult classes will resume in September.

Summer:
The committee was given a final copy of the 2012 Summer Brochure. Denise  distributed the brochures to the 3 elementary schools and the schools have sent them home with the children.  Brochures are also available in the library, light department, town hall and town manager’s office.
Denise has begun hiring staff to cover the summer positions that need to be filled.  We were light on lifeguards and water safety instructors this year and Denise has begun to fill those positions.  Denise has promoted two lifeguards from last year to head guards, because the head guards from last year will not be returning.  Denise will be interviewing next week (school vacation week) for drama, tennis, snack bar, field sports and pass checkers.
The recreation passes went on sale beginning Monday, April 2nd. The 400 non-resident passes are sold out.  Resident passes can be purchased on-line and then picked up at the office.

We offered an early registration for the All Day Program to the current participants in the Before and After School programs as a way of thanking them for participating during the school year.  We have very few openings left in the All Day Program in most weeks for the general registration, since we currently have 475 slots filled out of the 585 available slots (65 slots per week x 9 weeks).
Registration for residents will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12th.  Non-resident registration is Sunday, May 13th at 9:00 a.m.  Registration is available on-line only.  We will be in the office to handle any problems that may arise.

Miscellaneous:
Denise released the fields on Monday, April 2nd.  The past winter was unusually mild, which allowed the earliest release that Denise can remember.   Lisa asked about maintenance of the fields and Denise said the leagues pay for them to be fertilized by an independent contractor that Denise contracts, but the town maintains them regarding grass cutting and stone dust.
E.J. Painting was the low bidder for painting the exterior surfaces of the pool facility buildings.
There will be a Skateboard Jam held at the Dawson Recreation area parking lot on Friday, April 20th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be a demonstration presented by Eastern Boarder to generate awareness and to see if there is any interest to continue this project which has been in the planning stage for over 3 ½ years.
Erin asked about the dog park. Denise said there’s nothing to report.  They are not satisfied with the Trout Brook site because of the small size.  They thought about Porcupine Hill, but there’s no parking.  Denise said it’s up to the Dog Park committee to do the legwork to find a site.
Erin asked if the pools were uncovered and Denise said they will be uncovered at the end of April or the first week in May.   Denise told the committee there still seemed to be a minor water issue.  The company that installed the pool found a problem with some of the water spout valves near the stairs in the family pool and they will be addressing and fixing the problem soon.
Denise said the only school that has called about a 5th grade splash party is Dawson, and it will be held on Thursday, June 14th.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.

The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on September 11, 2012 @ 7:00 p.m.
        at the Starbard Building.
