Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes
September 11, 2007

The Recreation Committee meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM

The minutes have been accepted as written for April 5, 2007 with the correction of omitting “for children” in the last paragraph under New Business.

The agenda was suspended to accommodate a public comment.  

Karl Makala, addressed the Recreation Committee regarding cross-country skiing at Holden Hills. Mr. Makala requests the Recreation Department apply for a grant through DCR to be used for recreational space at Holden Hills Country Club by October 1, 2007. The Recreation Committee reviewed all information Mr. Makala brought. Denise expressed that she would contact Roger Kane at Holden Hills Country Club and the Town Manger, Brian Bullock for further information. Denise will contact Mr. Makala once she has received information and consent from Mr. Kane and Mr. Bullock.

Director's Report:

Summer: There was a drop in the average daily attendance from 816 last year to 710 this year. Class participants is down by 7 participants, Revenue is down by $37485.00. Suburban Contract Cleaning came in as low bidder to clean the bathhouse and pool area at a cost of $2445.00 per month. South Shore Gunite repaired the pool before opening day at a cost of $2660.00. The “green space” expansion project was completed prior to the opening day. The total cost of the project was $24,913.00.  Picnic tables (3) were ordered at a cost of $2347.00.  The playground and paddleball courts were vandalized. Restitution is expected from those involved. The basketball courts were also vandalized with graffiti using spray paint. The cost to repaint is $3662.00. The tennis court at the old Rice School has been refurbished for the cost of $5350.00. A pad lock has been placed on the entrance, but access can be gained by contacting the Recreation Department for a key.  We offered 3 Friday night movies, 1 being cancelled due to weather, but attendance was poor.

Miscellaneous:  Before and After School registration began Aug. 1. We have 262 children enrolled between the 3 elementary schools. Davis Hill has a maximum in the AM with 52 children. Enough staff has been hired for the care of the children in these Programs. We have hired 2 new individuals to help in the Recreation Office. Nancy Mula is now the new part time Recreation Leader and Wendy Nickel will fill the new position of Recreation Supervisor. Wendy will be responsible for adult programming.

The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Starbard Building.
