Barbara Anger reported that the Friends purchased a folding machine for the Newsletters at a cost of $2,500.00.
The cost of mailing last month’s newsletters was reduced by $200.00. This was accomplished by changing the stickers. Barbara worked long and hard on this.
The Friends also discussed whether or not they should be involved with the senior trips. It was agreed that it may need some changing. Colony does their own trips, which they help subsidize.
The Best of Friends Valentine’s Cookie Sale will take place on February 8, 2008.
Barbara is working on making 100 hats, with the help of some of her crafters, for Gwen Callahan of the Weeaide campaign.
COORDINATOR’S REPORT
The Worcester VNA was here on Monday, November 19th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to provide flu shots. This year 167 shots were given to area seniors, as well as town employees.
Two informational sessions on Mandated Reporting were held on November 29th. Our facilitator was Mary Parenteau from Protective Services Division of Elder Services of Worcester Area Inc. The morning session had 24 participants and the afternoon session 15. Mary was an excellent speaker who gave valuable information and answered questions from the attendees. A big thank you to Paula for organizing this and to HPD Officer Gregg Sculthorpe who applied to the State for the ability to offer EMT credits for attendance at this event.
December’s events start with an Older & Wiser Seminar on December 5th. The Hu Ke Lau/Brightnights Trip will take place on December 6th, and a New Year’s Eve Party on December 31st. December’s movies include “The Christmas Card” on December 6th, “An Angel in the Family” on December 13th, and International Day featuring Iceland on December 20th.
Our three annual Christmas events all happen to fall in the same week. The Senior Center’s Christmas party will be held at 12:30 on Monday, December 10th with a lunch catered by Toupin’s. This year’s menu will be salad, homemade raisin bread, baked ham with pineapple, whipped potatoes, green beans almandine, and coffee and an ice cream filled cream puff with hot fudge sauce for dessert. The cost of the luncheon is $17.00. Elliott Lockwood will provide our traditional entertainment by playing Christmas music. The next day, December 11th at 9:30, the students and staff of Mountview School will hold their annual Christmas Breakfast for Holden Seniors. On Saturday, December 15th the Wachusett Area Rotary Club will have their annual
Christmas Breakfast at The Manor Restaurant in West Boylston at 8:30 a.m. This breakfast is for seniors in the towns of Holden, Paxton, Princeton, Rutland, Sterling and West Boylston. Reservations for all three events are being made through our office.
Kudos to Paula and Dale for working with Catholic Charities to offer Thanksgiving holiday meals to approximately 12 elders, and Elder Services of Worcester to offer a frozen meal for the day following Thanksgiving. Paula and Dale delivered between 45 and 50 frozen meals to our clients such that the volunteered Meals on Wheels drivers would not be overwhelmed. They will be working with these two agencies again to deliver a Christmas Day meal and a frozen meal for Christmas Eve lunch.
There was no other old or new business, and a motion to adjourn was made by Jerry Heslinga and seconded by Cheryl Owoc. The meeting adjourned at 8:40 a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Maureen Buffone
