Chair DeLaney and Mayor Surrency welcomed every to the May 15, 2012 Joint Meeting with the City of Hawthorne and ACBOCC.
AGENDA ITEMS
1. ACFR use of Hawthorne Fire Department Building
Mayor Surrency- Has a copy of a November 8 email from Mr. Bailey stating the Hawthorne Fire Department will be addressed at the off Tuesday meeting. This email was sent 8 months ago and he is trying to bring closure to this issue. Based on emergency responses the majority of the calls are from the Hawthorne area and that’s why we are asking the fire department to move back into the Hawthorne Fire Department.
Mayor Surrency passed out several maps showing where the majority 911 calls in the SE side of the County were.
Commissioner Byerly- Thank you to Mayor Surrency for the updated information. The goal is to reduce response time. There is a history to this situation between the City of Hawthorne and Alachua County Fire Department. He agree the department should be in a place where they will service the majority of the calls, but Hawthorne needs to show leadership and get the building prepared and agree to an agreement that will keep Alachua County Fire Department there for a long time. The building need to be brought up to code with the roof, electrical, etc.
Chief Ed Bailey- The City of Hawthorne was not happy with the MSTU and started their own fire department. Alachua County relocated their unit to Orange Heights then relocated in Grove Park.
Commissioner Pinkoson- City Staff should get with Chief Bailey and decide how the building should be brought up to code and bring it back to the County Commissioners.
Discussion Continued.
2. Economic Development
Mayor Surrency- The City of Hawthorne is asking Alachua County to help market the South East side of Alachua County by recommending the City of Hawthorne to Economic Developers. The City of Hawthorne has several pieces of Commercial Zoned properties that are ready for development.
3. Alachua County Housing Authority
Mayor Surrency- The City of Hawthorne, Alachua County Housing and Youth Build have partnered together to fix up the Pleasant Garden Subdivision. Alachua County Housing are limited to what they could do because it is not a HUD facility. If we can get HUD money we can put in central AC and Heating Units in the homes in this subdivision.
Chair DeLaney- If we can get a letter from the City she is willing to send it to the appropriate people in Tallahassee supporting this subdivision becoming a HUD facility.
4. Proposed Interlocal Agreement for Road Grading
Mayor Surrency- We are asking ACBOCC to enter into an Interlocal Agreement for road grading.
City Manager Vause- We are hoping we can schedule road grading with ACBOCC because you have a grader in the Hawthorne area certain months out the year.
Chair DeLaney- We have heard this issue from several small cities and we will ask the County Manager to look into an agreement that could be worked out with multiple cities.
COMMISSION GENERAL AND INFORMAL DISCUSSSION- None
