1. Discussion of City Firehouse
County Manager Randall Reid- Moved station #25 to Grove Park and have money invested in the Grove Park facility. Think Grove Park is a suitable location to serve the City of Hawthorne and the surrounding area. The current location will not affect the ISO rating and we may look into setting up a location in the Plum Creek area. We may consider moving the Fire Station back to Hawthorne if the building is refurbished and the City signs over the deed to the building to Alachua County.
Moved to direct manager to have the Fire rescue staff compare Grove Park and Hawthorne location to determine which area provides the better service to the broader community and get the ISO rating.
Motion- Commissioner Byerly Second- Commissioner Baird
Discussion:
Ms. Sharon Surrency- Asked Alachua County Commission to find the average Emergency calls for this area.
Mr. John Martin- Looked at the agenda and some of the same topics are from 3 years ago. The City of Hawthorne entered the MSTU several years ago. He knows for a fact Alachua County does not own several fire stations in rural cities in Alachua County so it’s not feasible to own the building in Hawthorne. The City of Hawthorne started our own fire station because the County was raising our contract fee by $100K in one year. We need to forget the past history between the two and move forward.
ICM Vause- the City of Hawthorne is looking into refurbishing the fire station building.

2. Discussion on Alachua County Housing Authority, Pleasant Gardens, Hawthorne
Mayor Surrency- There is 40 units in this subdivision and over ½ of them are vacant. Some structures are falling apart; septic tank mounds have not been removed. The City of Hawthorne has had several clean up days along with the residents to clean the area and give moral back to the people that live there. These units do not have AC or heat like other County Housing units.
Ms. Gail Monahan, Executive Director of Alachua Co. Housing Authority- We don’t have people requesting to live in the City of Hawthorne. HUD no longer wants to deal with the units in Hawthorne. We don’t receive any subsidy from these units. We have applied for grants to refurbish the units in Hawthorne but was denied.
County Commissioners, City Commissioners & Staff continued discussion.
3. Discussion on Mullins Property, NW Corner of SR20 and 211 Street, possible code violation
Chair Pinkoson- Spoke with Alachua County Code Department and there is no code violation on the Mullins property. The structure was inspected and the home is secure. The home was built in 1915 and is a historical structure.
4. Use of CR2082 by log trucks
Commissioner Randall- Citizens have reported this road being heavily used by log trucks. This street goes through a residential area and a school zone.
Chair Pinkoson- A possible solution may be to put up a weight limit sign and it will then be up to the Sheriff office to up hold the weight restrictions.
County Manager Reid- Will have County Engineers to do an analysis to determine what could be done.
CITIZEN COMMENTS
Mr. John Martin- Came on City Commission when sewer was going into the Pleasant Garden area and we had a separate engineer contracted to do the hook ups and the crush the septic tanks.
Mr. Richard Moore- The fire station discussion is based around statistics. It should be based on what is best for the citizens of Hawthorne.
Mr. Von Fraser- Want to commend the City & County Commissioners for getting together to resolve problems.
ADJOURN
Chairman Pinkoson and Mayor Surrency adjourned the Joint County/City Special Meeting
These minutes are submitted for approval.
