Energy Committee Minutes 01/21/10
Minutes from Meeting Thurs 1/21/2010, 7pm, Town Office Kitchen:

Roger stepping down as chair.  Aaron "elected" chair.

Diane presented and discussed the town office energy usage values.  Agreed that this should be the focus of report for Town Meeting.

Planning for the next year:
Town Meeting - no new budget request recommended.  Hope to have an opportunity to mention that while there is no new request, the savings are not directed to a fund, therefore a new request for other improvements is expected next year following analysis of building needs and best opportunities for improvement.

Town Energy Improvement Updates:
- Work Party scheduled for 1/24 at 1pm to repair plastic in Town Offices and add plastic to windows in gymnasium
-Investigate and report to BOS on the options for heating sources in both Town office and meeting house bldgs.  Dan suggested that despite not having a specific warrant article for purchasing a new boiler, if the boiler fails the town will simply purchase a new oil boiler unless we can provide the details on potential benefits associated with alternatives (currently agreed that wood pellets is the best candidate as alternative to oil).  Therefore it was agreed that this year a focus can be placed on generating a report for the BOS to "arm" them with this information in case the opportunity arises.
- LED lights on pathway are installed and functioning.  Light closest to the entrance may be malfunctioning or improperly set (appears to remain lit all of the time).
- XMas lights - Roger determined to have lights turned off before snow melts this year.  Would like to suggest a specific date for turning off the christmas lights each year, more about energy saving perception than actual cost savings.

 Grant Activities:
- Grant activities for Greenfield are in hands of town office personnel (processing)
- Town of Temple extended open invite to TEC to discuss their reception of REGGIE grant (EPA grant for regional greenhouse gas emissions reduction).
- Clean Energey Cool Plant - Dan to attend Energy block grant discussion Tues

Restatement of TEC mission (does anyone have the official copy of this, it would be good to get this out and re-read it):
Investigate and communicate energy efficiency improvements and alternative energy options to BOS.  Act as a conduit for information about energy efficiency for the town.

TEC Goals 2010 (feel free to comment):
- Develop report on heating options (cost/benefit comparison) for town offices then town meeting house
- Continue to develop a long term strategy for town energy efficiency.  Assess past actions and substantiate future improvement suggestions
- Find a new showcase project for alternative energy solutions.  Investigate solar options for public location.  Wood pellet boiler at Town office.

Next Meeting: Feb 18, 7pm, Town Office Kitchen
