Conservation Commission Minutes 03/28/2012
Greenfield
Conservation Commission Meeting
March 28, 2012

Present:        Members - Carol Irvin, Neal Brown, Karen Day
Guests – Lisa Murphy from Southwest Regional Planning

Meeting called to order at 7:30pm.

Lisa Murphy from Southwest Planning came to talk to us about developing a short range plan to carry out the intentions set forth by a grant that the Piscataquog Watershed Land Conservation Association received that includes Greenfield and Francestown Conservation Commissions.

We discussed various ideas that would be worth pursuing as items that the Conservation Commission would support. The groundwater ordinance came up and Lisa thought that
Pierce Rigrod from DES might be willing to come talk to residents about groundwater in general.

A draft of short term goals could be:
Protection of headwater streams and riparian corridors
Continue to work with local land trusts to protect the community’s headwater streams through conservation easements.
Educate the public about the importance of protecting the community’s headwater streams and riparian buffers.
Protection of water quality
Promote Best Management Practices for non-point source runoff
Recommend that hazardous mitigation include Best Management Practices for stormwater runoff
Increase Conservation Commission membership
Solicit writers to help with finishing the NRI
Article in the local newsletter to find volunteers
Promote beautifying Greenfield
Continue to hold the Roadside Round-Up
Continue to do the volunteer appreciation meal
Support the planning board efforts to educate the public on groundwater ordinance
Hold a public meeting with the BOS/PB to educate about the groundwater ordinance

The Roadside Round-Up was discussed. Neal has been working on the sponsors for the raffle. He has 17 so far. We have the envelopes and the stamps for the mailing and we will stuff envelopes the evening of April 12th. Neal is asking the GiVERS for volunteers to help with the envelope stuffing. Carol will bring refreshments for the stuffing party. Karen will go to Epsom to get the bags before the 12th. The Woman’s Club will prepare and host the dinner.  Carol will make sure personnel are at the Meeting House early to help set up the tables and chairs. The Planning Board will provide ice cream for the Roadside Round-Up dinner and scoop it that night. This year, we will have a presentation and interpretation of the photos residents have been taking for the visioning process of the master plan.  This presentation will be given by Lisa Murphy.

Neal has been talking to Jill about the order for the blueberry bushes. We will order 36 bushes. Neal and Karen will work out the care and transport of the bushes for the Blueberry Jamboree.
