Conservation Commission Minutes 2/22/06
Greenfield Conservation Commission
Minutes
February 22, 2006

Attended: Karen Day, Karla Allen, Neal Brown, Roger Lessard, Miriam Lockhart, Janet Romanelli

Old Business

Change use tax warrant article: The selectmen didn’t like the 100%, Conrad suggested $25K from the general fund instead, and then $10K, so it was agreed that it would be preferable to keep it the way it is for now and Karen withdrew the warrant article - we will try next year.

Update on programs: see below.  Other ideas (also added below): Karla suggested PLT program to teach the kids, which then reaches the parents - send kids to camp each year - she will look into. Reminder that the deadline for the April-May Spirit is March 1st - Karla will find out if N.E. Forest Products will sponsor. Also: Neal mentioned a school project to take pictures on a walk behind Winrose Farm - this is a good bog to protect.

Living Room Meetings – Scheduled for February 26th at 2:00 p.m. Andrea Gilbert’s home. Only 3 RSVP’s so far - each of us could make some calls to boost attendance. Karen will forward each of us a copy of the letter.

Outline of 2006 Programs to teach awareness (copied in from prior minutes with some updates):
Photo Contest – All year (need more entries! not from Con Com members). Deadline is March 19th.
Tom Tyning Amphibian Program - April 23rd at 6:30 p.m.
Roadside Roundup - Earth Day 2006 - April 22nd
Non-game Program – maybe beaver
Eyes on Owls - May 21st (a Sunday afternoon).
Wild animal map – must get this together before March 19th - Karen has a map; it could be mounted on FoamCore and covered with plastic. Karla got maps from Fish & Game to use, also.
Fish & Game Program – could be deer, bear, turkeys, moose
UNH Cooperative Extension Program could be on forestry, animals, trees, etc. - Karla mentioned a program on women’s sawmills during WWII and others, but would like a firm date and June was mentioned.
Dollars and Sense Program – later in the year
Turtle Program for June - May instead? Carele Mayer? Suzie Denehy? David Carroll, turtle man from Warner ($$) or Barry Wicklow ($0).
Other ideas:
o       Summer - hikes? July?
o       Organic gardening after May - Swain?
o       Sell safe mosquito “donuts”
o       Beekeeping - Kathy Carpenter, Wiggleman?
o       Something like Musterfield Farm days
o       Butterflies - Miriam will talk to Lucille Wilson - July, August?
o       PLT program for kids; send them to camp
o       Nature walk/photos behind Winrose Farm
o       The author of “The Granite Kiss” - Kevin Gardner - lecture?
o       Miriam will look into a March program at the library.

Bookcase for Library “Conservation Shelf” (Karla) - the wood plan didn’t pan out; Karla will follow up.  The library wants the shelves painted, but it was felt that natural wood would be more in keeping with the image we would like to present.
Any other business brought forward by members or attendees - none.
Mail of importance - none
