Conservation Commission Minutes 6/22/05
Greenfield Conservation Commission
Meeting Minutes
June 22, 2005

Attendees: Karen Day, Neal Brown, Roger Lessard, Janet Romanelli and Miriam Lockhart
Absent: Ray Cilley, Karla Allen
Guest: Dario Cararra

New Business

1.      Signs for Conservation Properties – the three properties are the George Proctor Recreation Area, the Greenvale Cemetery tract, and the Koch-Brown Conservation Area.  Dario spoke about his plans for a 6’ x 1’ pine hip-roofs to be covered with copper. The copper-sheeting would be done by a contractor who would charge $150-200 each, $125 if we have them all done at once (five?). The signs would be hung underneath by chains, in case of wind. We already have the posts, Dario is storing them. This style of framework also keeps birds from nesting underneath, making the signs easier to maintain. Roger agreed to get Dario the name of someone at the state workshop. Question: who makes those carved signs for the state – are they made at the state workshop? at the prison? Dario was informed that he could just send bills to the Greenfield Conservation Commission.

2.      Recycling Committee – Members of the ConCom voted to start a recycling committee. Roger will be the Chair. Janet volunteered as a non-voting member to conduct research on an as-needed basis. Other members are Neal Brown and Bob Jennings, and Frank as ex-officio. They were planning to meet on the following evening. Various objectives discussed were exploring other associations besides the NRRA to get better pricing, since a visit to the Warner facility revealed other alternatives, and to have a place to store recycling in order to hedge pricing – a structure would be needed to do this, one could be built from tires, as Roger had seen.

3.      Miriam Lockhart attended and was welcomed.  She would like to join the Commission. The following were explained to her: the difference between full and alternate members, and the swearing-in process by the Town Clerk. Karen will contact Deb Davidson to get the paperwork started for her appointment. She was also informed about and expressed interest in the state-provided training available in November.

Old Business

4.      Update on the Aquifer Protection District project – Karen sent letters to the planning board, the selectmen and the code officer proposing a meeting with the expert Paul Susca from the DES and has heard only from Bill Brooks and Peter Hopkins.

5.      Update on the Lake Host program – Roger, Karen, Karla and Janet have all attended the training as backups along with Neal, Agneta and Colin Sutton of Peterborough (a student at Wooster College in Ohio who will work 20 hours per week) as primary hosts. We have accumulated offsets thus far of $1,395.17 out of the necessary $2,262.70. The portable toilet will also contribute approx. $75 per month. When backup volunteers work we are allowed to claim $17 per hour towards our offsets. Crotched Mt. Center has offered us $1,500, so Neal will send the bill for Colin’s insurance to Jim Orr. Jim Orr will also be having Amy Smagula give a Weed Watcher training course soon. We asked Neal to hold onto the materials, so he will bring them to the next ConCom meeting.

6.      Any other business brought forward by members or attendees: a) Janet brought up the turtle crossing issue – next year during egg-laying season (June) she would like to put something in the Greenfield Spirit, write a letter to the editor of the Ledger, the Transcript and the Hillsborough papers, and to put up signs – the ConCom agreed to pay for some signs and participation by the elementary school was mentioned. b) ConCom ended up selling 68 compost bins, netting us $340.

7.      Mail of importance - none.
