Greenfield Conservation Commission Meeting
May 12, 2004 Minutes
Those present: Karen Day, Karla Allen, and Dario Carrara
New Business: Rand Brook Project: Karen attended a meeting with the PWA that included the Francestown Conservation Inc group as well as the Trust for Public Lands and the George Russell Foundation. Barry Wicklow, a biologist, has been conducting tests on Rand Brook which runs through Greenfield as well as other nearby towns. He has discovered that the quality of the water in Rand Brook is excellent and that it is one of the last brooks that runs through largely undeveloped land. A large section of the brook has already been protected in Francestown and another section in Greenfield has been protected. Rand Brook runs through the George Proctor area and the Fleck Conservation land. Since the George Proctor land is set aside for recreation and the Fleck land is set aside for conservation, it seems like the best
thing to do would be to protect these properties through conservation easements. The first step in this process would be to contact the selectmen to see if they would be in favor of it. Then we would have to have the lots surveyed. The PWA would be interested in holding the easements for us.
New Business: Wetlands violation on Old Lyndeborough Road: The selectmen contacted Karen about a wetlands violation on Old Lyndeborough Rd., a class 6 road. A Lyndeborough land owner built a house on his lot that is only accessible from Greenfield over our class 6 road. He took upon himself to remove tree stumps from the wetlands along the side of the road. Karen & Karla went up and looked at it. There is a small brook that runs from under a stonewall that runs parallel to the road. There is debris that is clogging the brook as well as a large area of mud created by the machine used in the wetlands. There is also a “culvert” that was installed which is actually a 5 or 6” drain pipe. Karen reported the findings to the selectmen and they asked her to get someone from DES down here to look at it.
Bill Thomas the DES area inspector is planning on coming down soon.
New Business: Crotched Mt. NRI Presentation: CMRC will be presenting their recently finished NRI to a group of town officials on May 27th at CMRC at 7PM. We are all invited.
New Business: NH Lakes Association presentation invitations: Since we only had a small group this evening, we will plan to talk about this at our June meeting.
New Business: Senior Project Evaluation: Again since our group is small this time, we will do this evaluation at our June meeting.
Old Business: Signs for Conservation Areas: Dario Carrara has resigned from the Commission to join the Planning Board. He still plans to help with the Conservation Area signs. He asked if we could get the posts up for the signs this summer so that he can make the signs this winter and put them up as soon as they are made.
Old Business: George Proctor Forest Management Plan: Karla has not had a chance to get to see John at the extension to see if he might have a copy of the map. This may not matter as much if we proceed with getting a survey done for the Rand Brook Project.
