Board of Cemetery Trustees/Board of Trustees of Trust Funds meeting minutes
DATE: June 14, 2011 6 p.m.
LOCATION: Town Office Building
The Board discussed the recent decision by the state to cut funding for the prison detail that was working for the town and in the cemeteries. The fence repair at the Old Meetinghouse Cemetery that had been slated to be continued by the prisoners this summer, will have to be completed in another way. State law requires cemeteries to be fenced and last winter’s storms badly damaged the section near Sawmill Road.
Catherine Shaw’s new chart listing veteran graves for flag placement was viewed with board members expressing appreciation over the fine job. We have a paper chart and a computer file for future use.
Bills for Greenvale flowers, arborist work and a gift certificate for the outgoing sexton, were approved.
Conval senior Zeb Wood has been awarded the annual Doris Belcher Scholarship and will receive a check for $800 from trustees in September.
The lawn mowing and trimming at Greenvale Cemetery was discussed, with the board voting to draft a letter to selectmen noting the drop in quality since last year.
The position of sexton was discussed, along with the ongoing problems of record keeping. The Board voted to change sextons and send Philip Woodbury of Peterborough a letter of thanks for his long service to the town, along with a dinner gift certificate.
Merrill Villmore was voted to serve as the new sexton.
The continuing upgrading of cemetery records was discussed and Trustee Jan Moller will be updating the current computer files from written records.
The ongoing balance in the Ralph Sayles Trust fund was again discussed, as the board hopes to develop a plan for approval by the Probate Court that would be in keeping with the original will left by Dr. Sayles to develop a sportsman’s area in town.
The meeting adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Gil Bliss
