Trustee of Cemeteries and Trust Funds Minutes 04/01/10
Board of Cemetery Trustees/Board of Trustees of Trust Funds meeting minutes

DATE:  April 1, 2010 6 p.m.
LOCATION:   Town Office Building

PRESENT:  Gil Bliss, Margo Charig Bliss, Jan Moller, trustees; Merrill Villmore, arborist.

1.      The Board discussed a request for a future burial in the Whittemore Cemetery, by a resident who lives nearby. Some background research on the Whittemore and Knight Cemeteries will be conducted to determine whether the cemeteries were ever officially closed and the current official status.  Merrill Villmore will investigate cost of replacement or repair of the Whittemore Cemetery gate.

2.      The arborist bill was approved and submitted to selectmen. Merrill also discussed plans for cemetery maintenance in the coming year, including new plantings and care for the existing flora.

3.      Broken and/or leaning stones were reported in the Meetinghouse Cemetery. Merrill will inspect them. If necessary, they can be repaired in the fall.

4.      The Board voted unanimously to continue its present investment policy of keeping trust funds in certificates of deposit at Ocean Bank.

5.      Copies of the 2009 MS-9 forms were signed by board members and prepared for mailing to the state departments of Justice and Revenue Administration.

6.      Continuing discussion was held on the price and size of town cemetery plots.  Jan and Margo will canvass local towns for comparative information.  In relation to the price, the board voted unanimously to require purchase of corner markers with each new lot sale, effective immediately. The board will collect the current average price of the markers (about $200) with each new sale and pay vendors when the markers have been installed.

7.      A discussion was held as to the future curator for town cemeteries. Phil Woodbury will continue in this capacity as long as he is able. Gil will investigate the situation in surrounding towns that do their own burials.

The meeting adjourned at 7:30  p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Gil Bliss
