Trustee of Cemeteries Minutes 04/30/2015

Board of Cemetery Trustees
Minutes

DATE: ~Monday, April 30, 2016   4:00  p.m.
LOCATION: ~~Town Office Building

PRESENT: ~Gil Bliss, Margaret A. Charig Bliss, Lee LeBlanc, Arborist/Sexton Merrill Villmore, resident Patty Donovan

The Board:
  • VOTED to approve a bill from the Sexton for $507.25
  • AGREED to express the board’s sympathy to Jeremy Gagnon on the recent death of his father.
  • RECEIVED a report from the Arborist that the burlap wrappings around the yew trees were ineffective this winter because the snow was so deep the deer were able to reach in over the top. In one place the weight of snow snapped the wooden stakes supporting the burlap. As a result of the on-going struggle to keep the yew trees going, Sexton recommends replacing them with deer-proof, low-growing  spruce trees. He intends to replace four this year and others as needed in the future, eventually phasing out the yews.
  • NOTED from the Sexton that there are five broken headstones in the Meeting House Cemetery, which will be flagged for repair. He also will undertake repairs of the hinges on the gates at Greenvale Cemetery.
5.   REPORTED on the Meeting House Cemetery fence repair that work is underway to replace the cement and wood fence with granite and chain. Corporate fund-raising will begin soon and the trustees will ramp up publicity.
  • VOTED to raise the gravedigger’s fee. New fees are as follows: $700 for weekdays, $750 for Saturdays, $800 for Sundays. The motion was made by Charig Bliss and seconded by LeBlanc.
  • DISCUSSED how to identify all veterans’ graves to be marked with flags. Anyone knowing of a verteran who is buried in a town cemetery and has not been honored with a flag is asked to contact Catherine Shaw at 547-3442.
  • ADJOURNED at 4:50 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,

Gil Bliss
Chairman
