Glenville Fire Chiefs Association and Stratton Air National Guard Base Major Accident Response Exercise Planned
On Sunday, June 12, 2015 at 9:00 am, Assistant Chief Ed Oliveri, Beukendaal Fire Department will lead an exercise involving fire, ambulance and first response agencies from Schenectady, Albany, Saratoga and Montgomery counties in a drill testing and challenging skills for managing a larger scale scene as would be created by a C130 crash at Maalwyck Park in the Town of Glenville.
The planning for this exercise started nearly one year ago and includes representatives from Stratton Air National Guard Base, Glenville Fire Chiefs Association, Beukandaal Fire Department, Scotia Fire Department, Glenville Police Department, New York State Emergency Management Office, Schenectady County Fire and EMS Coordinator, Ellis Medicine and Duanesburg Ambulance. Throughout this learning experience, the committee members have expanded the number of agencies participating to improve the experience for the participating agencies.
Oliveri will lead the response to include participation from over 30 volunteer, municipal and government fire departments; commercial, volunteer and municipal ambulance agencies, a helicopter transport, the Schenectady County water task force, CP Rail and Schenectady County Unified Communications Center.
“This exercise is designed to evaluate the responding agencies ability to stabilize a large accident involving an aircraft and its passengers. We are also evaluating the ability of the water task forces to assist including rescue and environmental preservation,” said Ross Thornhill, President of the Town of Glenville Fire Chiefs Association and Event Director.
All participants are invited to engage in a post-event hot wash following the exercise to share best practice and lessons learned. The entire exercise is planned to be completed by 1:00 pm that afternoon.
