Presentation: Eric Bryson, Limited Jurisdiction Courts
Working on a grant application and initiated a conversation about limited jurisdiction courts, including one for 2nd and 3rd offense DUIs. Probing for interest. He’s been researching a wellness court from Anchorage that has treatment-oriented supervision. It’s a twelve to eighteen month program. The incentive for participants would be that when they complete their sentence would be reduced, given one more chance before attain felony status. They would need to voluntarily put them in this structured supervision situation. If the sentence is held out, it extends court jurisdiction for the necessary amount of time.
Since Treatment Court already has a system in place, not too difficult to add to that.
Jami thought this would have the most power with 3rd offense DUIs because they don’t want to serve 30 days in jail. There was a long discussion about this. Susan and Jami volunteered to meet with Eric to brainstorm details, structural things.
SKSC
Jenna indicated no parents came to Parent Party Patrol in February and she’s feeling prepared to let go of the program if there isn’t a change by May. Gail Schontzler from the Chronicle did come.
Article on Dennis Carlson passed around.
PBT’s
Alex presented about how Intoxilizers work. The group discussed that intoxilizer results are important even though they aren’t admissible in court. Jami talked about how they can still be valuable.
Alex said the Sheriff department has 8 – would like at least four more. Mostly they are used on night and evening patrols – Wants one for each car so deputies don’t have to trade off and there is more than one available if they need to be used at a party with a lot of people – Very slow with one, especially since you have to wait two minutes after each blow before the next.
The department is requesting 3 – The Task Force approved the purchase of two immediately – Mark moved and Susan seconded. Consider the purchase of one or two more when the second reinstatement fee check arrives, in April.
Cat Cab:
Rides are up – but funding is dismal. The Tavern folks are not supporting it – they’ve promised funds but haven’t cut the check. Individual bars – KO’s is very supportive, other bars are not. Need $12,000 to make it through the rest of the semester.
The group brain stormed ideas for fund raising – and approved $1000 immediately, deferring another $1000 for April. Mark moved; Susan seconded.
