Subject:
Order to adopt a zoning ordinance amendment to standarize restrictions for keeping poultry in residential districts.

ACTION:  Council action is anticipated.
Summary:
Councilor Rodden introduced an amendment on October 24 that would standardize the keeping of poultry in residential districts.  The 2008 amendment added the RA and RC Districts for poultry and introduced strict provisions. These provisions are now being recommended for any lot in the RB, F and VMU Districts that is less than 40,000 square feet in size. The attached memo includes the draft language.  The Council held a public hearing on November 14 at which there was no public comment.

At its December 6, 2011 meeting, the Planning Board, acting as the Town’s designated Municipal Reviewing Authority, held a public hearing on proposed amendments to Section 5.7 of the Zoning and Site Plan Review Ordinance relative to the keeping of poultry. One citizen spoke at the hearing and testified in support of the proposed amendment.  The Planning Board voted 5-0 to recommend that the Town Council approve the proposed ordinance amendment as drafted.
