The Fire Department has submitted a grant application to build a 20' x 70' two story addition to the rear of the Winn Road Fire Station, Station 4. The purpose of the addition is to provide much needed space for growth of the department and to address life safety code issues for the entire building. The projected growth of the Fire Department is anticipated to be in the Winn Road Fire Station district. The Station currently houses the following equipment: engine, tanker, ambulance and utility truck. There is not space for additional apparatus and the current quarters is cramped with limited available storage. We propose to build an addition
which allows for growth in personnel and equipment while at the same time providing a sprinkler system to the building and allowing for public access to the 2nd floor training room. The public cannot use the facility now due to the lack of ADA access and the inability to lock the apparatus and equipment areas from the training room. We have found that the current training room at Central Station is very busy with Fire-EMS events and cannot accommodate the public requests for use. The proposed addition includes an entrance that would allow a public group to use the training room, the kitchen, and the bathrooms without having access to the offices, bunkrooms, and the Apparatus Bays. Station 4 currently has 34 members and is considered the first responding service to nearly half of the Town of Falmouth, from Woodville Road to the western borders. As more homes and businesses are built in the west side of town, we anticipate an increase in membership as well as increased call volumes. In August we are adding 4 live-in Souther Maine Community College students who will live in, and respond to calls, from Station 4. This will be the first year of Falmouth Fire-EMS' participation in the program and will assist in our response to emergencies townwide especially in the west side of town. Specifically, the addition will:
- Add an elevator for public access to the 2nd floor - Add a sprinkler system to the building - Add additional fire and life safety upgrades such as fire alarm strobes and detection devices. - Add a fitness room to the 2nd floor - Add lockers and showers to accompany the fitness room - Add office space to the second floor - Add two bunk rooms to the second floor - Add a room to the bay area on the first floor for vehicle maintenance supplies and storage - Add a gear room on the first floor to house members' gear - Add 3 additional spaces for vehicles in the bay area which will allow covered storage of the MCI trailer and the Child Passenger Safety Trailer - Allow for future placement of an aerial apparatus if needed (current bays not long enough for the tower or a ladder truck) - Allow for future placement of an additional brush truck or engine if needed - Provide storage
areas As part of the Federal Stimulus package, there is only $210 million available for fire station projects nationwide. Some of the priorities listed in the grant are a town's participation amount to the total project costs, LEEDS, life safety measures, and firefighter fitness. Our estimates place the
projected cost of the addition and renovation to be $1 million.
